Congratulations to our department chair, Professor Raj Koul! 🤘

Raj Koul, department chair and professor in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences - UT Austin, received a Fulbright Specialist award earlier this summer to complete a project at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. This unique opportunity enabled Koul to contribute feedback on research methodologies for speech, language, and hearing-related projects, in addition to leading two seminar sessions.

We are pleased to welcome Jacie McHaney, Ph.D., to the SLHS faculty! 🤘

Beginning this fall, we are expanding our research and teaching by adding four new tenure-track faculty and a full-time professional-track professor. These new faculty appointments will allow us to grow our research portfolio and further develop new curriculum for our students.

Earlier this summer, our audiology students helped protect the hearing of professional musicians, sound engineers & technicians, and more by creating custom hearing protection for them! 👂

In the audiology clinic, students examined ears, administered hearing tests and captured earmold impressions. The impressions were then scanned with a 3D earmold scanner, which converted the physical earmolds into digital scans.

The custom hearing protection will help these professionals protect their hearing while on the job. 🤘

Today, we are proud to announce the naming and expansion of the Moody College career center! A generous and transformational $10 million gift from Joe and Monica Eastin will formally establish The Eastin Center for Career Readiness, housed right on the first floor of the G.B. Dealey Center for New Media.

With this gift, Moody College will launch a career fellows program to connect students with alumni and professionals, continue integrating foundational career readiness skills across the curriculum and expand funding for unpaid internships.

“Through the center, I hope that students can gain even more exposure to professionals, hearing from guest speakers and having real conversations with them," Eastin emphasized. "I also hope they can gain professional mentorship, and of course, internships. All these things are vital to accompany the curriculum they’re getting within the classroom.”

Third-year doctor of audiology student Tyler Scott has spent the past year exploring the relationship between cochlear implants and certain hair types through her capstone project. Drawing on experiences from cochlear implant users, Scott aims for her research to raise awareness and guide change.

"I noticed a lack of information about hair and cochlear implants in the professional space,” Scott said. “I thought this was a big gap in patient care, especially for patients who have thicker and curlier hair types.”

“I wanted to find a hair-based solution for a hair-based problem.”

Imagine if your access to sound depended on whether a braid could hold a piece of technology in place.

Worldwide, one million people rely on cochlear implants, yet for many, hair texture is an overlooked obstacle to consistent hearing.

Third-year audiology student, Tyler Scott, set out to research “a hair-based solution to a hair-based problem.” For her capstone project, she researched the relationship between cochlear implants and curly hair, centering the lived experiences of users and parents to resolve this gap in patient care. 🦻
