Congratulations to our very own RCHGHR Executive Director, Jenny Rich, on her new book, "Paper Tombs: Post-Holocaust Memorial Books and Prewar Jewish Life," which will be published on July 21, 2026 by NYU Press, in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
The book examines yizker bikher – a remarkable corpus of memorial volumes created by Holocaust survivors and pre-war émigrés in the decades after the war. Each volume was written to document the vibrancy of one prewar Jewish community, to bear witness to its annihilation, and to transmit memory across generations. Paper Tombs examines yizker bikher as both texts and as objects, as artifacts of grief, resilience, and collective identity.
The book will be freely available as an open access publication - students (and everyone else) will be able to access it at no cost.
