Abroad they went‼️🔥🇪🇸

Hart School faculty members Dr.’s Dave Shonk and Jonathan Oliveira led 12 students to Spain to begin Summer break for a Hart School Study Abroad trip!

The students on the trip were exposed to the world of sport in Spain through experiences at four stadiums of teams in La Liga (Top flight of Spanish soccer) seeing the Santiago Bernabeu home of Real Madrid, the Metropolitano Stadium home of Atletico Madrid, the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium of Sevilla FC and the RCDE Stadium which is the hosts of Racing Espanyol.

On top of that the group received industry presentations from LaLiga, the PGA Tour, a local Sponsorship Activation Agency and Universidad Europa, along with Guided tours at various locations through Madrid, Sevilla and Barcelona!

Dr. Sandy Manjunath presented her study on the impact of using AI Learning tools in the classroom at the 2026 North American Society for Sport Management Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico last week‼️😤

Oh…did we also mention she’s also been selected as a NASSM officer? Yeah…Dr. Sandy did that too 🔥

On a rainy Monday, we’re here to show you what our SRL students did out in the sun a few weeks ago.

Students in Dr. Dave Shonk’s SRL 670: Advanced Event Planning Course helped with both the planning and implementation of the Duke Club Golf Classic at Lakeview Golf Club.

The students got an inside look at the world of planning a high-level fundraising event for JMU’s athletic department, while of course enjoying some community as a cohort!

Students in HM 322: Lodging, Clubs and Resort Operations and Technology course recently brought education beyond the classroom with an interactive field trip to two Hilton properties in Harrisonburg: Home2 Suites and The DoubleTree last week!

Designed to deepen students’ understanding of operations and technology in hospitality management, this visit offered everything from front-of-house guest experiences to back-of-house systems and workflows.

A highlight of this experience was the opportunity to engage directly with managers and executive teams during tours that explored the benefits, challenges, and future of hospitality technology. Tours of both properties showcased operational strategies, unique hotel features, and
service standards that reinforced classroom concepts.

These tours gave students meaningful
networking opportunities as well as valuable insight into the realities of modern hotel operations!
