Yesterday, friends, family, colleagues, and students gathered in the UT Gardens to celebrate the life and legacy of Professor David Buckley, who taught in the UT School of Natural Resources for nearly 30 years. Dr. Maryanne Murphy, a veterinary nutritionist at UTCVM, is investigating the use of GLP-1 drugs in the treatment of animal obesity.

"Dr. Murphy said she thought GLP-1 drugs did have real potential in veterinary medicine — but as a supplement to, rather than replacement for, traditional weight management plans.

"'I think it would not be a simple, quick, easy fix, where you just give the medication and you don’t have to worry about anything else,' she said."

GLP-1 drugs for pets could be the next frontier for the blockbuster weight loss and diabetes drugs.
