The Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Kansas strives to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying fundamental biological processes through research and to disseminate knowledge through education and training. We are an interdisciplinary group of outstanding faculty who work closely with postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and undergraduates to investiga

te fundamental biological problems on all levels from molecules to cells to organisms. We carry out cutting edge research in a wide range of areas including biochemistry, biophysics and structural biology, bioinformatics, cancer biology, genetics and genomics, immunology, microbiology and virology, molecular, cellular and developmental biology, and neuroscience.

Anthony Fehr researches how coronaviruses cause disease. In fact, he was the first to establish a connection between a cellular modification and the anti-coronavirus response. With this discovery, his team developed novel inhibitors that support the immune system by blocking viral activity. Fehr’s research team also created tools to genetically alter coronaviruses, and these tools could be used to develop a vaccine that would result in lasting immunity.

LETS GO DR. UNCKLESS!!! We love boosting STEM education in Kansas!

The Unckless Lab at the University of Kansas conducted a yearlong outreach program with Blue Valley North High School, helping students learn about microbial diversity in insects. The work was funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
