๐ŸŽ‰ Big congratulations to Noyce Scholar Anastasia Davis, lead author on a newly accepted article in The Science Teacher!

Co-authored with Dr. Katie McCorrison (Associate Professor of Science Education & PI on our $1.2M NSF Noyce Grant) and Dr. Jason Coym (Associate Professor of Chemistry), their study features a hands-on, 3-day simulated urinalysis lab where high school students step into the shoes of analytical chemists using chromatography to diagnose biological analytes.

By bridging real-world chemistry and science education, this inquiry-based lesson shows how our preservice Noyce Scholars are actively conducting research, designing innovative curricula, and inspiring the next generation of scientists! ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿ”ฌ

๐ŸŽ‰ Celebrating our newest teacher candidates at our inaugural Candidacy Orientation!

Our future educators spent the day connecting, engaging in discussions on professional ethics and expectations, and taking key steps toward their teaching careers. To top it off, students wrote letters to their future selves as teachersโ€”which Mrs. Howell will return to them right before graduation at the end of their internship! ๐Ÿ’Œ

A special thank you to Dr. E. Bernard Beck and Ms. Suzanne Clemons from the Alabama Education Association for joining us and pouring so much wisdom into our students! ๐Ÿ‘โœจ

โœจ Week One: Teaching with Purpose โœจ

We kicked off the term by exploring our core values as educators and reflecting on how they shape the way we teach, support, and connect with all learnersโ€”including students with disabilities.

We also brought art and critical thinking together to create incredible masterpieces of self-expression! ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿง  Students had the chance to think deeply, express their unique identities, and honor the many different ways people communicate and learn.

Week 1 takeaway: Teaching isnโ€™t just about what we teachโ€”itโ€™s about who we believe our students can become. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿงช Moving beyond "cookbook" chemistry labs and into authentic discovery!

A new publication led by Associate Prof. Katie McCorrison, Prof. David Forbes, Goldwater Scholars Bailey Baxter & Mary Helene Marmande, and Honors students Lucy Orr, Hannah Lawley, & Kathryn Mayeaux bridges science education and chemistry through Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs).

Their study, "Breaking the Recipe: Preparation through research-driven experiences," highlights how future educators and aspiring researchers build deep scientific reasoning and confidence when tackling real research together.

Huge congratulations to this brilliant team of faculty and students on showcasing the true power of shared inquiry! ๐ŸŽ‰
