JAGUAR JUBILEE🐆✨

What an honor it was to be apart of this year’s Jaguar Jubilee Celebration, formally known as Convocation! I was able to be part of the program by helping President Jo Bonner and Vice President and Provost Dr. Andi Kent crown our mascots, Southpaw and Miss Pawla, as king and queen of Mardi Gras!

Convocation is a special occasion for me; my sophomore year I had the opportunity to be the guest speaker, and other years I have performed with the Jaguar Marching Band. With this being my senior year and last convocation, it was a full circle moment getting to be with all my friends and celebrate the school we love most!

September will always be a month that means a little more to me. Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Su***de Prevention Month, and Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month aren’t simply awareness campaigns to me; they represent pieces of my own story and so much of the work I’ve been honored to do.

Seven years ago, on September 24, 2019, I was diagnosed with pediatric thyroid cancer. That experience changed the direction of my life in ways I never could have imagined, and this past May, I was incredibly grateful to celebrate 5 years cancer free! September also brings me closer to another anniversary of losing my mom to su***de, a loss that continues to shape my passion for mental health advocacy, prevention, and reminding others that they never have to struggle silently.

This September feels especially meaningful as I reflect on my year as Miss University of South Alabama. I entered this year wanting to use my title for something bigger than myself, and I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to do just that. Through The Wellness Bridge, I brought our community together for another USA Out of the Darkness Walk, raising more than $15,000 for su***de prevention, advocated for su***de prevention legislation on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. with AFSP, supported pediatric cancer research through Rally Foundation and Children’s of Alabama, and continued using Wellness Wednesdays, speaking opportunities, and community outreach to advocate for both physical and mental wellness.

Being Miss University of South Alabama has given me a microphone, but the causes behind that microphone were part of me long before I ever wore the crown. This year has reminded me of just how powerful it can be when we use the positions we’re given to serve others. So this September, I’m celebrating survivors, remembering those we’ve lost, advocating for those still fighting, and continuing to turn awareness into action. I’m grateful that some of the hardest chapters of my story have given me a reason to help write better ones for someone else!

HAPPY AWC DAY!

On this day 7 years ago, I went to my yearly wellness exam where my cancer was discovered. If it wasn’t for that checkup, we’d be talking a completely different story right now! On May 4th of 2023, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey proclaimed August 17th to be Adolescent Wellness Checkup Day in the State of Alabama. I am so honored to share the importance of wellness exams to save lives across the state of Alabama. So, in celebration of today, go schedule your yearly wellness exam if you haven’t already! It could save your life ;)

oh hey… I KNOW HER!

Such a fun surprise and full circle moment getting to see myself on the University of South Alabama’s Student Leader Wall during our media day for University of South Alabama Feature Twirlers! From Miss University of South Alabama and SGA, to the Jaguar Marching Band, Chi Omega, serving as Spring Wish Week Chair, and founding the USA Out of the Darkness Walk… apparently I really like being involved 😭

Going into my senior year (still not ready to talk about that) I’m so grateful for how much South has pushed me to grow, serve, and become a stronger leader. So honored to receive this recognition and even more honored to be a Jag; thank you so much USA Student Involvement!

Rallying for the 47, one workout at a time! 💛🎗️

This month, I’m taking on the Challenge with Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research in honor of the 47 children diagnosed with cancer every single day. As a childhood cancer survivor, this challenge means so much more to me than simply getting a workout in. I know how fortunate I am to be on the other side of my own cancer journey, to have a body that allows me to move, perform, compete, and do the things I love. I never want to take that gift for granted.

As a titleholder in the Miss America Opportunity, I’ve also learned that being is about so much more than physical appearance. To me, it means taking care of the body and mind that allow us to show up as our strongest selves. It’s about discipline, confidence, strength, and creating healthy habits that help us become the best versions of ourselves. Through my service initiative, The Wellness Bridge, I’ve advocated for that same connection between physical and mental wellness.

I’m challenging myself to stay active while raising funds for childhood cancer research and honoring the kids who are currently fighting battles no child should ever have to face.

My goal is to raise $470, and I would LOVE your help getting there! Whether you donate, share my fundraising page, or even take on the Challenge yourself, every bit of support helps fund research for better treatments and cures.

Stay tuned by watching my IG story everyday on Miss University of South Alabama + Sydnee Cantley - MAO to see what workout I do and my fundraising progress!
