Jesse Starling is majoring in digital television and film in the University of South Alabama Department of Communication. You can catch his original film, "Unsteady," tonight at Mobile's Crescent Theater at 6 p.m.

In a recent interview, Starling explained to al.com that “Unsteady” is built around the struggles of the character John Griffin, played by himself. Griffin is a young man struggling with the loss of his parents when he begins using pain medication due to injuries from a car accident.

Thanks to a $3 million grant from the Gulf of Mexico Energy Securities Act, our students will benefit from a unique, on-campus experiential learning opportunity. The project will include a 30-foot-by-30-foot elevated outdoor classroom located on Three Mile Creek near the Glen Sebastian nature trails.

The grant also will support construction of approximately 1,500 feet of 8-foot-wide walkways over the water and marsh, providing a direct route for pedestrians and bicyclists from academic buildings on USA North Drive to to Technology and Research Park.

The on-campus outdoor classroom will provide an ideal setting for addressing pressing conservation issues including native habitat conservation, invasive species management, stormwater run-off, water quality and the benefits of nature-based solutions. It will be built with fortified features providing engineering classes with an on-campus setting for teaching about storm resilience.

Paying for school is always at the forefront of our students' minds. Congratulations to social work majors Keya and Josh for earning the competitive Southeastern Association of Area Agencies on Aging (SE4A) Scholarship!

Out of nine states, two awards were given, and the College of Arts and Sciences secured both! Keya (junior) and Josh (senior) are both proudly representing our social work and gerontology programs! 🐾🌟

Ari Theodore graduated in May with a degree in English and drama. He spends his workweeks traveling the country in one of the Missoula Children’s Theatre’s iconic Little Red Trucks. Along with a tour partner, he is guiding K-12 students from auditions to curtain calls to discover the magic of theater.

Theodore credits the faculty in both the English and drama departments with helping him discover his path.

“They were all such amazingly talented people,” he said. “They had a huge influence on how I viewed both disciplines and helped me realize my passion for teaching.”

Dr. Steven Scyphers (second from right), associate professor at South's School of Marine and Environmental Sciences, has been awarded a Watershed Award from Mobile Bay Magazine. The awards recognize the environmental guardians of our communities.

Scyphers and his team educate the community about the benefits of better coastal development, and study and report the human dimensions of fisheries.

Jordan Rambo studies behavioral science as a graduate student in South's biology department. Last week she presented her research on the physical traits and nesting habits of the beautiful Eastern Bluebird.

Over the past six years, 92 campus bluebird nest boxes are checked daily between February and August by both graduate and undergraduate students. Their patterns leave clues about both the positive and negative effects of humans on the environment.

Rambo is also a wildlife artist. Her art is on display at the ArtSpace@BioMed, located on the 3rd floor of the Baugh Biomedical Library, through the end of the month.

A study led by Dr. Gabriel de Oliveira, assistant professor in the Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences and senior scientist I at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, warns of accelerating deforestation and escalating socio-environmental threats facing Indigenous communities in the Brazilian Amazon.

The study has been published in the journal Nature Sustainability and hopes to bring international attention to the Javari Valley, located in the western Brazilian Amazon — a region considered one of the last great ecological and cultural strongholds of the Amazon rainforest. https://heyor.ca/xIOtgY
