NOAA and other scientific agencies are forecasting the current El Niño to become very strong over the next 2–9 months—perhaps the strongest in over 150 years— raising important questions for resource management across the country.

To support planning and decision‑making, the USGS Climate Adaptation Science Centers have developed a series of webpages that outline the forecasted regional impacts of the 2026 El Niño and discuss what these changes may mean for resource management in each CASC region.

Explore the link to learn more and read about the more specific regional impacts for the south-central US.

The Chickasaw Nation, under the leadership of Governor Bill Anoatubby, has been a strong partner of the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center (CASC) since its inception in 2012. With his retirement at the end of June 2026, the South Central CASC team wishes Governor Anoatubby all the best and expresses our continued appreciation for the Nation’s longstanding partnership, support, and amazing work over the years. Governor Anoatubby has always been a strong supporter of CASC and our mission to help fish, wildlife, water, land, and people adapt to extreme events. His leadership and long-standing commitment to education, research, stewardship, and opportunity have made a lasting impact across The Chickasaw Nation and beyond. We look forward to continuing our partnership with The Chickasaw Nation in the future.

An Update from the South Central CASC:

As we embark on 2026, we wanted to provide an update on our current status. At this time, the South Central CASC is still at minimal operations while we wait for the approval of our base funding.

We appreciate the support we have received from you, and we will continue to do as much as possible in our region to support the ongoing National CASC mission.

Some activities will continue as planned for this year, thanks to collaborations and partnerships with other organizations and institutions. For example, we are pleased to once again offer scholarships for study abroad participants and DGES students at the University of Oklahoma.
