A new study, published in Diabetes Care®, a journal of the American Diabetes Association, found 58% of patients with type 2 diabetes who had metabolic surgery went into remission, compared with 3% on medication and lifestyle changes alone.
That’s the finding from ARMMS-T2D, the largest and longest-running trial of its kind, led by John Kirwan, Ph.D., now executive director of the OU Health Harold Hamm Diabetes Center.
The study also pinpoints which patients are most likely to reach lasting remission, helping doctors offer surgery earlier to the people it can help most.
