Over the past 15 years, UT San Antonio students have spent a combined 300,000 days in 45 countries pursuing study, research and service. This milestone celebrates years of learning and discovery around the world.

These experiences help Roadrunners build connections across cultures, gain confidence navigating unfamiliar situations and see their studies from a new perspective. The lessons they bring home can shape how they approach challenges, work with others and prepare for their futures.

For Professor Sue Ann Pemberton, preparing future architects includes giving students the chance to help preserve the buildings they study.

Since 2012, she has taken graduate students to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, guiding them through a month of measuring, drawing and researching the historic site. Students gain practical experience while helping preserve architectural history. This summer, their documentation earned second place in the annual U.S. National Park Service’s Charles E. Peterson Competition.

Through Rowdy Corps, Alinna Garcia, a UT San Antonio first-generation Honors College student and finance major, gained hands-on experience at the San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology (SAMSAT). There, she coordinated programs, led tours and learned to handle unexpected challenges.

Her work at SAMSAT also introduced her to audiovisual technology. Alinna followed her curiosity into a part-time finance position with an audiovisual company and, eventually, a full-time engineering role. Today, she installs audiovisual systems across the state of Texas. One of her projects took her to the State Capitol in Austin, where she spent a year supporting audiovisual work for the Texas House of Representatives.

Meet Arkajyoti Roy, a faculty member in the Carlos Alvarez College of Business whose work extends from the classroom to challenges facing our communities.

With a $250,000 grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, Roy is applying his business analytics expertise to help make AI-guided radiation therapy safer and more reliable. His research could improve cancer treatment, especially for patients receiving care in clinics with limited resources.

During Faculty Appreciation Month, we celebrate the faculty who teach our Roadrunners and apply their knowledge to challenges beyond campus. Roy’s research shows how business analytics can contribute to better cancer care for our communities.
