VCOM-Carolinas is the Spartanburg, SC campus of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), a four-year private osteopathic medical school offering the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. VCOM provides state-of-the-art medical education and research that prepares globally minded, community-focused physicians who improve the health of those most in need. With campuses in Blacksburg, VA, Spartanburg, SC, Auburn, AL, and Monroe, LA, VCOM has graduated over 4,100 new physicians since its founding in 2001, with over 69% going into primary care specialties such as family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology. VCOM has become one of the largest medical schools in the country, yet each campus maintains a nurturing small private college atmosphere for the student. VCOM partners with many community-based hospitals for clinical rotations throughout Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Louisiana. The College is known for its national award-winning programs in primary care and global medical outreach, as well as a sports medicine department caring for athletes at Virginia Tech, Auburn University, University of Louisiana Monroe and Radford University. 🩺 Preparing the Class of 2030 for the Operating Room! 🩺
Kristine Lombardozzi, MD, FACS, FCCM, Discipline Chair and Associate Professor for Surgery at VCOM-Carolinas, recently instructed the Class of 2030 in essential aseptic technique for the operating room. Our students are gaining hands-on knowledge and developing the skills needed to maintain a safe, sterile environment for patients and surgical teams.

VCOM-Carolinas' student orgranization American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOOG) hosted a Period Packing Party to benefit the Spartanburg Period Project. At the event, members of the organization made 844 packs for the SPP to distribute at schools and other partners in the community. Great job, students!

The Class of 2030 at VCOM-Carolinas had the opportunity to learn hands-on clinical skills during a splinting lab led by Lynn Campbell, DO, Discipline Chair and Associate Professor for Emergency Medicine on October 15. Students practiced applying an ulnar gutter splint, gaining valuable experience in immobilization techniques and patient care as they continue to build their clinical foundations.

VCOM-Carolinas' American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP) student organization held a simulated "mass casualty" event on campus on October 7. First year students acted as injured patients while second year students triaged them.

VCOM is proud to partner with the Butterfly Network, Inc to provide personal point-of-care ultrasound devices to every student! Students already use ultrasound technology in anatomy laboratories, using the devices on their peers to visualize normal anatomical structures and connect living anatomy with what they learn in the lab and classroom. This year, VCOM expanded the use of POCUS in clinical procedural skills training.

"Giving every student their own device allows us to make ultrasound a consistent part of their education from the very beginning," said VCOM Provost Deborah West. "Students can use it to strengthen their understanding of anatomy, build their physical examination and clinical reasoning skills, and become comfortable with a technology they are increasingly likely to use in practice. By the time they graduate, we want POCUS to feel like a natural part of the way they evaluate and care for patients."

Happy White Coat!!! What an incredible day celebrating our Class of 2030 students! Family and friends really showed up at the event yesterday. We LOVE the shouts of excitement as students cross that stage, the hugs and flowers. It is inspiring to see so many of the loved ones who were instrumental in getting our students where they are today and who will cheer them on through every step of medical school.
