Phototropism in action! This pine sapling was planted in shade and started bending toward the sun, growing at a dramatic angle as its stem twisted to chase light. Some trees instinctively reach for brighter spots, but too much shading can slow growth or stunt development. Other trees are more shade tolerant. If you’re planning or managing a new stand of trees, a little spacing and careful site selection can help young forests grow straight and strong.

Quick tips from the field:
- Plant with adequate spacing to reduce competition for light.
- If a sapling grows too tall and leggy, consider selective pruning or relocating to a sunnier, open area.
- Keep an eye on power lines and overhead obstacles to avoid future hazards.
