Researchers are exploring how genomics could revolutionise newborn screening, identifying more conditions earlier for better care. But it also raises big questions: privacy, ethics, costs, and health system readiness.

From self-service checkouts to city streets, surveillance technology is everywhere. But did you know it’s not just shaping how we behave—it’s subtly rewiring our brains?

A recent UTS study reveals that simply knowing we’re being watched can heighten our awareness of others’ gaze, activating ancient survival mechanisms. This unconscious hyper-awareness might sound minor, but it has big implications for mental health and social interaction.

Pain threshold and pain tolerance are often misunderstood, but they’re not the same thing. Pain threshold is the point where something starts to feel painful, while pain tolerance measures how much pain you can endure before needing relief.

UTS researchers Joshua Pate and Tory Madden explore the science behind these terms and how misconceptions about them can impact health outcomes and contribute to inequities in care.

Learn why understanding pain is more than just “mind over matter” and how this knowledge could shape future treatments.

Can AI chatbots rival doctors for back pain advice? New research says yes...and no 🤖💬

A new study led by Associate Professor Bruno Tirotti Saragiotto, Head of Physiotherapy at UTS, explores the potential of AI chatbots, like ChatGPT, in answering common questions about low back pain.

The findings reveal that AI chatbots can provide advice with accuracy levels comparable to healthcare professionals—particularly for questions about treatment and self-management! But, it’s not all smooth sailing—some inaccuracies were found, such as the belief that poor posture causes low back pain.

The takeaway? AI chatbots are promising tools for initial guidance but should complement—not replace—professional medical advice. 📱🤝👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

As healthcare evolves, so must our understanding of the tools at our disposal.
