📹CityUHK COM x BNU x HKBU Youth2 Videography Workshop

🏫From August 31 to September 5, 2026, the CityUHK Department of Media and Communication (COM) co-hosted the Youth2 Videography Workshop alongside the School of Journalism and Communication at Beijing Normal University (BNU) and the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Approximately 20 students from these three institutions participated in various activities, including visits to a television broadcasting company, campus tours, and a videography workshop. They also produced a mini video documenting their experience during the trip to Hong Kong. These activities are designed to broaden their perspectives and prepare them for future career challenges.

😆Liu Yantong, one of the student participants from CityUHK, was delighted to engage with fellow students and media experts. “The workshop has deepened my understanding of Hong Kong’s diverse media landscape. I learned about the industry’s operating context and the real-world challenges within Hong Kong’s communication sector. Beyond these professional takeaways, I truly value the opportunity to connect with peers from BNU. Exploring local life and experiencing the unique rhythm of day-to-day Hong Kong together with them has been an incredibly rewarding experience.”

📺The workshop has deepened my understanding of Hong Kong’s varied media landscape. 🤺COM Elite Fencer Lau Yee Ching won 1st runner-up in Challenge Cup Fencing Championships🥈

🎊Congratulations to Yee Ching!

Lau Yee Ching (Chloe), is a BATVB student enrolled in the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission (SALSA) Scheme. She also represents the Hong Kong Fencing Team. Last month, she competed in the Challenge Cup Fencing Championship and achieved an impressive 1st runner-up position in the women's sabre event.

"I will participate in the Asian Games in late September. This medal boosts my confidence to compete against other elite fencers in Asia. I hope to bring home more medals🙌🏻," Chloe remarked.

📰Mapping the sociotechnical imaginaries of generative AI in UK, US, Chinese, and Indian newspapers

On 2 September 2026, Professor John Downey from Loughborough University delivered a seminar titled “Mapping the sociotechnical imaginaries of generative AI in UK, US, Chinese, and Indian newspapers.”

👨🏻‍🏫In the seminar, Professor Downey examined the diverse and contested visions of the supposed impact of generative artificial intelligence on society. He observed that generative artificial intelligence has sparked a widespread public discourse oscillating between utopian and dystopian visions about a technologically determined near future. Employing the concept of AI imaginary and utilizing Cave and Dihals conceptual framework he developed a quantitative methodology to map the utopian and dystopian narratives of generative artificial intelligence. He revealed a dystopian perspective in the United Kingdom and the United States focusing on challenges such as workforce displacement and misinformation whereas in China and India the narrative is more utopian highlighting potential benefits for technological leadership economic growth and social advancement. The study provides methodological and conceptual tools for a comparative examination of the sociotechnical imaginaries of generative artificial intelligence.

🏫Faculty members and doctoral students attended the session and engaged in a lively and intellectually stimulating discussion. In responding to questions from the audience, Professor Downey shared valuable insights on how national newspapers construct competing sociotechnical imaginaries of generative AI.

John Downey is Professor of Comparative Media Analysis and Associate Pro Vice Chancellor at Loughborough University, UK. He was elected to the Academy of European Sciences in 2022 and to the Academy of Social Sciences in the UK in 2025. His research interests include environmental communication media and politics in India and the impact of AI on the cultural and creative industries.

🥋Last week, Chau Ngai Long, a newly admitted bachelor student in the Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong, represented the Hong Kong team at the Taekwondo WT President's Cup America 2026 in Lima. His exceptional performance earned him a bronze medal in the Men's 54 kg category, marking the fifth international competition medal this year.

“The medal means a lot to me and boosts my confidence to compete with international opponents. I will continue striving for more outstanding results in the future.”

✈️‘The Grand Canal’ Study Tour – Summer 2026

📚From August 16th to 22nd, 2026, five undergraduate students from the Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) participated in the Grand Canal Study Tour. This event was co-hosted by COM and the School of Journalism and Communication at Nanjing Normal University (NNU) in Jiangsu.

🌏During this seven-day trip, the students had an immersive experience exploring the origins of the Great Canal. The itinerary included visits to the China Grand Canal Museum and the National Cultural Park, as well as heritage sites such as Xijin Ferry and the Jingkou Sluice Site. These activities enriched their understanding of the development of waterborne transport in Mainland China.

📹The tour provided exceptional opportunities for students to refine their videography skills. Both CityUHK and NNU students were tasked with producing and submitting short videos documenting these visits, offering practical training to boost their success in communication. This initiative also aimed to enhance their storytelling abilities.

🎊Dr Wu Yuheng Receives Prestigious RGC Junior Research Fellowship

We are pleased to announce that Dr Yuheng Wu has been awarded the prestigious Junior Research Fellowship by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. The fellowship will support his postdoctoral research over the next two years in the Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong, under the supervision of Prof Ki Joon Kim.

🏫Having joined COM in 2021 as a dual-PhD student, Dr Wu earned his first PhD from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2025 and is currently completing his second PhD at COM under Prof Kim's supervision. Dr Wu's research aims to advance a socio-psychological understanding of human–AI interaction and human–machine communication, with particular attention to how increasingly agentic AI systems shape human experiences, psychological well-being, and agency. His work has appeared in leading venues, including the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, New Media & Society, and the Proceedings of the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.

Since the establishment of the fellowship in 2019, COM has hosted three recipients to date:

• 2020/21: Dr ZHOU Yixin (supervised by Prof ZHU Jonathan)
• 2025/26: Dr BAO Huanyu (supervised by Prof LEE Edmund)
• 2026/27: Dr WU Yuheng (supervised by Prof KIM Ki Joon)

📚The two-year fellowship supports exceptional young scholars conducting postdoctoral research at UGC-funded universities, aiming to foster the next generation of academic leaders and advance groundbreaking research in Hong Kong.
