Dr Dani Madrid-Morales, a graduate of the 2018 PhD class and currently a lecturer in the School of Information, Journalism and Communication at the University of Sheffield, has been appointed as Co-Editor-in-Chief at the Journal of Communication.

🙋🏻‍♂️As the leading publication in the communication field, the Journal of Communication is among the most cited and highly regarded titles in its area.

He will begin his role on 1 September 2026.

🏅COM Life-Saving Athlete Ng Sze Kwan Claimed 3 Medals in Netherlands Championship

🏫The Department of Media and Communication at City University of Hong Kong is delighted to announce that Year 2 BATVB student Ng Sze Kwan (Season), representing the Hong Kong Lifesaving Team, participated in the Netherlands Championship (The Orange Cup 2026) in Rotterdam.

🤩She achieved an impressive performance by winning 2 Gold and 1 Bronze Medal in individual and team relay events. Notably, she and her teammate broke a new Hong Kong Record in the Women's 4x50m Obstacle Relay and Medley Relay.

👏🏻Congratulations on this remarkable result, Season!

🏫Department Visit by The Affiliated High School of South China Normal University

👀On 17 July 2026, 30 students and teachers from The Affiliated High School of South China Normal University have visited the Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong.

📺During the visit, COM provided students with the opportunity to experience the daily responsibilities of a TV news anchor. Some students even dressed formally to role-play as news reporters in front of the camera. Additionally, they toured professional facilities such as the 3-D Virtual TV Studio, Advertising Design and Shooting Studio, and Digital Broadcasting Recording Room.

💪🏻COM will continue hosting these types of visits to enhance social outreach.

👨🏻‍🏫COM Research Seminar: The New Data, the Old Problem: Validation in the Age of Synthetic Social Science

🏫On 26 June 2026, Prof. Winson Peng from Michigan State University delivered a seminar titled “The New Data, the Old Problem: Validation in the Age of Synthetic Social Science.”

📝In the seminar, Prof. Peng examined the methodological evolution of social science from the age of made data, produced through researcher-designed surveys, experiments, and interviews, to the age of found data, captured through platforms, devices, and digital traces. He argued that the field is now entering an age of synthetic data, where large language models and AI agents can generate responses, interactions, and simulated social environments. The presentation contended that despite these methodological shifts, the central problem remains the same: validation. The key question, he suggested, is not simply whether new forms of data are larger, more naturalistic, or more flexible, but whether they can validly support the claims social scientists want to make. Using LLM-driven social simulation as an empirical illustration, Prof. Peng demonstrated why behavioral plausibility is only a starting point, and proposed a layered view of validation that considers the data-generating process, construct representation, behavioral correspondence, inference, and generalization. The talk emphasized that the larger task is to develop claim-aware validation strategies that clarify what synthetic data can, and cannot, tell us about human communication and social life.

🏫The Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is delighted to announce that Dr. Huanyu Bao, a Postdoctoral Fellow in COM, has received the esteemed Garmin Health X Fitrockr Research Grant 2026.This competitive program supports innovative, wearable-based health data research across Asia. A joint initiative by Garmin Health and Fitrockr, the grant provides selected researchers with advanced smartwatches, high-performance health data infrastructure, and comprehensive ecosystem support to push the boundaries of wearable technology applications.

📝Dr. Bao’s project, titled "AI-driven Data Sonification as Therapeutic Intervention and Digital Heritage for Palliative Patients," focuses on individuals in their end-of-life stage, a critical and growing area of public health concern in the region. 🏫Department Visit by South Tuen Mun Government Secondary School

On 29 June 2026, 25 students from South Tuen Mun Government Secondary School have visited the Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK).

🤩To enhance senior students' understanding of communication studies at the university level, Ms. Katrina Yu, Consultant of COM, delivered a talk highlighting the characteristics of our bachelor’s program and the exchange and internship opportunities available through the department. Additionally, Ms. Yu conducted a mini-lecture introducing the fundamental definitions of various media and communication forms, focusing particularly on broadcasting and media types.

👩🏻‍🏫Beyond the learning experience, the students explored our professional teaching facilities, including the Omnimedia Digital Newsroom, 3-D Virtual TV Studio, and Advertising Design & Shooting Studio. We believe this visit will benefit all students by increasing their awareness of media and communication studies.
