School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong The region’s first such institution, the SCM was founded to nurture a new generation of interdisciplinary artists and creative media talents.

The City University of Hong Kong School of Creative Media (SCM) was founded in 1998 to nurture a new generation of interdisciplinary artists and creative media professionals, and to develop new ideas and technologies for the creative industries in Hong Kong, mainland China and abroad. State-of-the-art teaching and research facilities are brought together in a unique architectural setting designed

by Daniel Libeskind that is a hub for innovation and discovery in Asia. SCM students are trained across disciplines spanning computer science, fine arts, visual design, creative writing, cultural studies and digital technology; a pedagogy that bridges the boundaries between art and science and integrates traditional and new media. The school values applied creativity, cultural awareness, and critical thinking as much as business sense and entrepreneurial success. SCM's internationally recruited faculty members are amongst the foremost artists and researchers in the field, and they bring a global perspective to the school.

🎮 Reflecting on the Epochs of Gaming at History of Games 2026 🎮

CityUHK School of Creative Media and the History of Games Steering Committee co-hosted History of Games 2026, a conference delving into the fascinating question of how we define the epochs of gaming history. Much like cinema’s shifting eras—from silent films to New Hollywood—games have their own Golden Ages, revolutions, and generational shifts shaped by technology, culture, and artistic movements.

Our two keynote speakers offered compelling insights that expanded the conference dialogue. Professor Akiko Sugawa-Shimada examined how female fans in Japan have transformed gaming culture and historical engagement through media and heritage tourism, challenging traditional gender dynamics in gaming. Professor Paolo Pedercini explored cyclical crises and industry disruptions in video game history, prompting reflection on which types of game experiences are lost during these periods and on how to understand the present state of the Western game industry. These perspectives sparked lively discussions on topics including genre evolution, fan-driven periodization, and hardware cycles.

A special thank you to all the paper presenters for their insightful talks and contributions. Your research and perspectives made this event truly enriching!

Thanks to everyone who joined us in this deep dive into understanding—and rethinking—the ages that define gaming culture.
