Is Antarctic ice loss already locked in?

Prof. Yucheng Lin, Assistant Professor at the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), was recently featured on Singapore’s business radio station, Money FM 89.3, on Saturday Mornings with Glenn van Zutphen.

Following news of record-breaking glacier melt in Switzerland, Prof. Lin shared insights from his recent research published in Nature Geoscience, titled "Committed Antarctic Ice Sheet mass loss by the end of the twenty-first century."

Key Takeaways from the Discussion:
🧊 Irreversible Ice Loss: Antarctica has entered a phase where snowfall can no longer offset mass loss—making sea-level rise a structural reality coastal cities must confront.
🌊 Regional & Global Impact: The discussion covered what these glaciological changes mean for Singapore, Southeast Asia, and global coastal communities.
🛡️ Action Beyond Mitigation: While reducing emissions remains vital, mitigation alone is no longer enough. Coastal nations must prioritize proactive adaptation strategies today.

At SEE, our researchers remain dedicated to advancing cutting-edge climate science and fostering informed global dialogue on sustainability.

We are thrilled to share that Prof. Jian Wang, Associate Professor at the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), in collaboration with Prof. Ronghui Qi from South China University of Technology, has published groundbreaking research in the top-tier journal Energy & Environmental Science, titled “Vapor-bridge ion-isolation enables high-durability seawater electrolysis”.

💡 The Breakthrough:
Direct seawater electrolysis has long been hindered by chloride ion corrosion, membrane poisoning, and gas blockage. To solve this, the research team developed a novel “v***r-bridge ion-isolation” strategy.

Using a moisture-permeable membrane, seawater is converted into pure water v***r before entering the reaction site—completely trapping salts and impurities on the other side.

🌱 Global Impact:
By eliminating the dependence on precious freshwater, this technology unlocks a practical, cost-effective route for coastal regions to produce green hydrogen—accelerating industrial decarbonization and supporting global carbon neutrality goals.

🌿 Stepping Up for Nature: CityUHK SEE Student Chapter & Trail Sweeper Clean-Up🏞️

Following the busy Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day Golden Week holidays, our School of Energy and Environment (SEE) Student Chapter 2026/27 teamed up with environmental organization Trail Sweeper on 11 October 2026 for a meaningful clean-up initiative at Shing Mun Reservoir! 🧹

Bringing together around 30 dedicated SEE staff, students, and volunteers, our team rolled up their sleeves to tackle litter left behind on local campsites and hiking trails. Together, we successfully removed and properly disposed of 8 kg of non-biodegradable waste and debris, helping to restore and protect our precious local natural habitat! ♻️✨

More than just immediate environmental remediation, this hands-on event served as a powerful reminder of environmental stewardship, proper waste management, and the core principles of Leave-No-Trace outdoorsmanship. 🌱

A massive thank you to Trail Sweeper and all our amazing participants for making a real-world impact and championing global sustainability! 🙌💚

💡Insights from researchers at the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), have been highlighted in a special report by Times Higher Education (THE), following a high-level panel discussion co-organized with CityUHK at the 2026 THE Global Sustainable Development Congress.

Chaired by Prof. Benjamin Horton, Dean of SEE, the panel titled "Building sustainable cities in the face of climate emergency" brought together key academic leaders and public officials—including Prof. Ping Han, Associate Professor at SEE, and Prof. Peipei Chen, Assistant Professor at SEE, alongside Prof. Jung-Eun Chu, Assistant Professor at Seoul National University, and Mr. Fadly Amran, Mayor of Padang, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia—to discuss cross-sector strategies for urban climate resilience.

The report emphasizes Prof. Benjamin Horton’s perspective that technological innovations must integrate with social sciences and community needs to truly succeed. Building on this, Prof. Ping Han and Prof. Peipei Chen shared key insights into how academia, government, and industry must collaborate to establish public trust when deploying green technologies. The discussion also examined the integration of data-driven early warning systems and nature-based defenses to protect vulnerable urban areas against extreme weather.

This feature highlights SEE's ongoing commitment to shaping global conversations and driving real-world climate adaptation solutions!
