Bringing together expertise in marine ecosystems, AI-driven biodiversity tracking, and satellite-based emissions monitoring, speakers will highlight how tools such as drones, environmental DNA, and high-resolution instruments like MUSICO are enabling more precise, data-driven climate action. The discussion will connect innovations across scales, demonstrating how integrated technologies can strengthen conservation strategies and accelerate the transition to a nature-positive future.

The Day 1 programme at BEC Climate & Nature Theatre will examine how organisations can understand and respond to the growing intersection of climate and nature risks, with a focus on resilience, disclosure and operational performance. Participants will explore the physical impacts of climate change, the role of biodiversity and natural systems, and the increasing expectations around climate and nature-related reporting. Through case studies and practical insights, the programme highlights how businesses can integrate risk into asset management, strengthen decarbonisation strategies, and build more resilient operations in the face of environmental uncertainty.

🌡️How is climate change impacting coastal cities like Hong Kong? At ReThink HK 2026, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗙𝗲𝗶 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗡, Associate Head & Chair Professor in the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR), will explore how the atmosphere is changing around us, from rising temperatures and extreme weather to air quality and urban heat.

🔥 From a peak summer hazard to a "persistent warm-season threat"—Hong Kong is facing a rapidly escalating risk of severe heat stress. In a recent interview with the 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘵, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗝𝗶𝗺𝗺𝘆 𝗙𝗨𝗡𝗚, Associate Provost (Teaching & Learning) and Chair Professor in our Division of Environment and Sustainability and the Department of Mathematics, pointed out that this is “a risk projected to worsen”.

Citing his research team's study published in the journal Weather and Climate Extremes, Prof. Fung explained that the number of days per year repeatedly affected by heatwaves is projected to jump dramatically—from an annual average of 14 days in the 2010s to a staggering 101 days in the 2040s. 📊

CHEN Jiajing, our PhD student in Environmental Science, Policy and Management, shared his view in a recent China Daily Hong Kong op-ed, suggesting that the well-established Chile-Hong Kong "Cherry Express" could become Hong Kong's first flagship green shipping corridor.

🍒🚢Can a fast-moving fruit trade become a model for global maritime decarbonization?

In a recent China Daily Hong Kong op-ed, 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗝𝗶𝗮𝗷𝗶𝗻𝗴, a PhD student in Environmental Science, Policy and Management, suggests that the well-established Chile-Hong Kong "Cherry Express" could become Hong Kong's first flagship green shipping corridor.

The article highlights how this trade route, which handles a significant share of Chilean cherry exports destined for mainland China, already demonstrates exceptional logistics efficiency. Building on that success, Jiajing proposes transforming the corridor into a practical platform for maritime decarbonization through the adoption of cleaner fuels, emissions monitoring, green bunkering, and international collaboration. ♻️

The article also explores how this initiative could advance the goals of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan while supporting Hong Kong’s ambitions to strengthen its position as an international shipping center and a hub for high-value-added supply chain services. 🚢
