【PolyU LMS Orientation Day 2026 for Taught Postgraduate Students】

A warm welcome to the new joiners of the LMS community!

To kick off the new academic year, the Department hosted the Taught Postgraduate Orientation Day today, providing incoming students with essential academic guidance and valuable insights into future career opportunities.

During the event, students received comprehensive programme information from our Programme Directors and Deputy Programme Directors, including Prof. Xiao Guang and Prof. Raymond Wong (MScGBDA); Prof. Song Miao (MScGSCM); Prof. Yang D**g and Prof. Zhou Yusheng (MScISTL); and Prof. Pan Kai and Prof. Feng Zhichao (MScOM). The programme was further enriched by inspiring sharing sessions from alumni and students, who offered practical advice on academic success, professional development, and career advancement.

The orientation also highlighted PolyU’s research excellence and maritime studies facilities. Prof. Yang D**g, Centre Director, showcased the PolyU Maritime Data and Sustainable Development Centre (PMDC), while Ir Prof. T. L. Yip, Centre Director, and Dr Judy Tong, Deputy Director, introduced the C.Y. Tung International Centre for Maritime Studies (ICMS) and its contributions to maritime education and research.

Recognising the importance of strong industry engagement, the orientation also introduced students to valuable networking and professional qualifications in Transport and Logistics through key industry bodies. We were honoured to welcome Prof. Nelson Chow, President of the Institute for Supply Management – Hong Kong Branch (ISM-HK); Dr Y.K. Chan, Chairman of the Six Sigma Institute (SSI); and Dr John Yu, Chairman of the Logistics Policy Committee of The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong (CILTHK).

We wish all our new postgraduate students a rewarding, enriching, and transformative journey at PolyU and LMS. We look forward to supporting their academic and professional success in the years ahead.

Our LMS Associate Professor and CY Tung ICMS Director, Ir Prof. TL Yip delivered a keynote presentation titled "Integrating Artificial Intelligence into Sustainable Maritime Energy Logistics and Supply Chains" at the ISLOGS 2026 Conference. The presentation highlighted maritime transport as the physical backbone of the global energy transition, adapting to alternative energy carriers such as LNG, hydrogen, and ammonia.

Ir Prof. Yip detailed how machine learning, digital twins, and multi-source data fusion enable a shift from reactive tracking to predictive and prescriptive intelligence — optimizing port scheduling, bunkering safety, and multi-vessel navigation while maintaining human-in-the-loop safety and meeting IMO decarbonization targets. To bridge technological capabilities with real-world application, the keynote concludes with strategic implementation pathways focused on data standardization, secure platforms, regulatory sandboxes, and cross-stakeholder capacity building.

The NEOM Research Seminar was held today in a hybrid format, welcoming participants both in person and online. Dr Ahmed IRAQI (Assistant Professor, ESCA School of Management, Morocco) presented his study, "A Cross-Continental Comparative Study on Digital Consumer Culture," in a session moderated by Prof. Miyuki Cheng (NEOM Executive Committee Member and Associate Professor of Practice, School of Fashion and Textiles at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University - PolyU).

The presentation examined the shift from technology-driven digital transformation to consumer-oriented digital culture. Based on a research framework covering 35 national ecosystems, the study analyzes how cultural factors influence technology adoption, with initial data outlining variations in digital trust, risk tolerance, and innovation engagement across countries such as Germany, the USA, and Morocco.

Thank you to Dr Iraqi for sharing his research, and thank you to all on-site and online attendees for participating. Stay tuned for our next research seminar!
