🎉Prof. Jaemin Lee Honoured with the 2026 American Sociological Association James S. Coleman Award for Outstanding Article🎉

The Department of Sociology is thrilled to announce that Prof. Jaemin Lee has received the James S. Coleman Award for Outstanding Article from the American Sociological Association (ASA) Section on Decision-Making, Social Networks, and Society. This annual award recognizes pioneering scholarship in decision-making, social networks, and the broader traditions of analytical and computational sociology.

🏆Award-Winning Article
Lee, Jaemin, David Lazer, and Christoph Riedl. 2025. “Complex Contagion in Social Networks: Causal Evidence from a Country-Scale Field Experiment.” Sociological Science 12:685–714.

The award committee offered high praise for this work, noting:

“This paper is an impressive large-scale country level behavioral experiment. It uses multiple methods to estimate effects (including a novel computational method to generate exact p-values). The study tests the theory of complex contagion to unpack behavioral adoption driven by social reinforcement and social embeddedness. Leveraging a rigorous large-scale field experiment and advanced computational methods, this research delivers substantial theoretical contributions to social network studies. It clearly verifies the core theoretical mechanism of complex contagion in real-world settings, distinguishes complex contagion from other diffusion processes, and effectively bridges individual behavioral choices and aggregate social diffusion outcomes.”

👏We extend our warm congratulations to Prof. Lee and his co-authors on this distinguished international recognition. This ASA award highlights the global impact of our department’s scholarship and brings honors to CUHK.

The award will be formally presented at the Section on Decision-Making, Social Networks, and Society’s business meeting at the ASA Annual Meeting in New York this August.
