From 31 August to 3 September 2026, the Computational Social Science Laboratory @ CUHK successfully hosted a four-day workshop on “Agentic AI for Social Science Research”, led by Prof. Yongjun Zhang from Stony Brook University.

The workshop attracted faculty members and postgraduate research students from various departments within the Faculty of Social Science, providing participants with an intensive and hands-on introduction to agentic AI and its applications in empirical social science research.

Throughout the four days, participants explored the foundations and practical implementation of AI-driven research workflows:

📌 Day 4 – The Pipeline

The workshop provided valuable opportunities for participants to engage with cutting-edge developments in agentic AI, exchange ideas across disciplines, and explore new possibilities for AI-enhanced social science research.

About the Book:
Q***r Resistance examines transformations in intimate lives in post-socialist China through the experiences and resistance of LGBTQ+ people. Drawing on ten years of research conducted between 2015 and 2025, and possibly one of the largest qualitative datasets of its kind, the book traces shifting modes of power governing intimacy and the weakening of the state-society-family alliance and its capacity to enforce Confucian and heteronormative norms. It illustrates how LGBTQ+ people construct communities amid intensified state crackdowns, develop new forms of personhood that subvert collectivist frameworks, and renegotiate intergenerational contracts. They navigate sexual possibilities opened up by marketization and digitalization, while confronting hierarchies of desirability structured by class inequality and stalled gender transitions. The book demonstrates that younger Chinese people’s efforts to resist traditional obligations and pursue nonnormative life projects are relational, partial, and intersectional, shaped through encounters with changing configurations of power and inequality at the intersection of global forces and local histories.

Congratulations to Prof. Jin Sun on Receiving the 2026 ASA Sociology of Development Faculty Article Award！

We are delighted to share that Prof. Jin Sun has been awarded the 2026 Sociology of Development Faculty Article Award by the Sociology of Development Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA), in recognition of his outstanding research achievements.

Prof. Sun and his co-author, Prof. Grégoire Mallard, were selected as co-winners of this year's award for their article:

Socio-Economic Review is widely recognized as a leading journal in economics, sociology and political science. The award represents one of the highest honors in the field of sociology of development and acknowledges the significant contribution made by this research to advancing understanding of contemporary transformations in global financial and political-economic orders.

Here is the appraisal for the award：

Sun and Mallard (2025) argue that the global financial order is shifting from a U.S.-dominated, unipolar neoliberal system toward a more multipolar and fragmented configuration, which they describe as “post-neoliberal parallel globalization.” They show that despite sweeping Western sanctions against Russia, as well as intensified U.S. efforts to isolate China economically, neither Russia nor China has experienced the kind of economic collapse that older theories might predict. The article’s broader contribution is especially timely because it highlights the emergence of parallel financial infrastructures, alternative circuits of capital, and new geopolitical alignments that are reshaping the architecture of global capitalism.

This achievement is a testament to Prof. Sun's scholarly excellence and also highlights the impactful work being conducted at the Social Governance and Sustainable Development (SGSD) Lab.

CUHK Hosts 2026 READI Conference

The Department of Sociology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) successfully hosted the 2026 Research on East Asian Demography and Inequality (READI) Conference from 23–25 July 2026, bringing together leading scholars and emerging researchers from Asia, Europe, and North America to discuss demographic change and social inequality in East Asia.

The conference was co-organized by the Department of Sociology,Center for Chinese Family Studies, CUHK, the Paul and Marcia Wythes Center on Contemporary China and the Global Japan Lab, Princeton University, and was supported by the Faculty of Social Science, CUHK. The READI network has become a leading international platform for scholarly exchange on demographic and social transformations in East Asia. The organizing committee comprised Professor Tong Yuying (committee chair, The Chinese University of Hong Kong), Professors Yu Xie and James Raymo (Princeton University), Professors Shen Wensong and He Qian (Department of Sociology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong), and Professor Jia Wang (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University). The conference was generously supported by the Faculty of Social Science for funding and by the staff support of the Department of Sociology at CUHK.

Over three days, participants engaged in vibrant discussions on family dynamics, fertility, aging, gender inequality, labor markets, education, social stratification, and intergenerational relationships. The program brought together scholars from a wide range of institutions, including the National University of Singapore, Peking University, Princeton University, Renmin University of China, Seoul National University, the University of Oxford, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Tokyo, and Yonsei University, among others. Local Hong Kong universities also participated actively, with multiple colleagues serving as session chairs and presenting their work throughout.

The organizers also extend their sincere gratitude to the conference sponsors, co-organizing institutions, presenters, session chairs, supporting staff, student helpers, and participants for their support and contributions to the conference's success.

CUHK Holds Mini-Conference on China’s Rural-Urban Inequality

On 27 June 2026, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) hosted a one-day mini-conference CSR Special Issue on Rural–Urban Inequality in Post-Reform China at Chen Kou Bun Building. Co-organised by CUHK’s Centre for Population Research and Gender Studies Programme, the event received sponsorship from CUHK’s Sociology Department and the Faculty of Social Science research fund.

The conference committee was co-chaired by CUHK’s Professor Ling ZHU and Professor Jing SONG. Professor Nicole W.T. CHEUNG, Head of CUHK Sociology, delivered opening remarks.

Distinguished keynote speaker Professor John LOGAN from Brown University delivered a keynote talk followed by a Q&A session. Three thematic sessions covered migration inequality, institutional stratification and digital rural-urban gaps.

Presenters and discussants came from leading institutions worldwide: CUHK, Xi’an Jiaotong, Fudan, Xiamen, Nanjing Agricultural, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, National University of Singapore, Brown, Princeton, Cornell, Northwestern and Tulane University. Scholars shared research on migrant settlement, housing, migrant children’s education, hukou stratification, gender disparities and digital divides.

The event concluded with closing remarks by Professor Yuying Tong, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Social Science. The mini-conference fostered cross-border academic exchange and laid a solid foundation for the forthcoming special issue on CSR.
