我們很高興為大家宣佈,孔德霞教授 (Prof. Dexia Kong) 近日發表了題為「Filial Piety Under Pressure: A Qualitative Study of Dementia Caregiver Burdens in Rural China」的最新論文。

Dexia!

We are delighted to announce that Prof. Dexia Kong has recently published a new paper titled “Filial Piety Under Pressure: A Qualitative Study of Dementia Caregiver Burdens in Rural China.”

🔬The study interviewed 25 dementia caregivers in rural China to explore their caregiving experiences and the burdens they faced. The findings showed that caregivers had limited dementia literacy, while also coping with multiple caregiving burdens, family conflicts, and challenges arising from insufficient resources. Filial piety, structural constraints, and low dementia knowledge also shaped their caregiving experiences. 🧠💭🌿

Congratulations to Dexia !

With Hong Kong’s fertility rate remaining low, what policies can genuinely respond to the needs of individuals and families?

📰Prof. Dai Haijing from our Department recently spoke with Oriental Daily News about fertility and population policy. She noted that a “healthy” fertility rate is not about meeting a numerical target, but about enabling people and families to realise their reproductive choices under supportive conditions. 💬 Fertility is more than numbers—it concerns individual choice, family well-being, and the support families need to plan their futures with confidence.

社工系邀請到戴海靜教授,分享其新書 《Beyond Market Meritocracy: Work and Family Care in Chinese Societies》。

【 In Conversation with Prof. Dai Haijing 】
“I think moving beyond meritocracy in the market is not only for family caregivers, but it's also for everybody who wants to have a life, wants to develop a hobby, wants to really have work and family balance.”

We invited Prof. Dai Haijing to share her new book, “Beyond Market Meritocracy: Work and Family Care in Chinese Societies”. The book explores the relationship between work and family care, focusing on the situations faced by caregivers in the workplace. It also examines, from employers’ perspectives, how gender norms, meritocracy, and different labour regimes influence their views of and decisions concerning family caregivers.

Prof. Dai also shares what makes the Department of Social Work special to her: its diversity. Bringing together colleagues with different academic backgrounds, research interests and frontline practice experience, the Department creates space for different perspectives to meet. This close connection between research and practice helps us better understand the needs of society and imagine more caring ways forward.

🌱 From Pressure to Hope: Children’s Well-being in Hong Kong
Children’s well-being is shaped not only by academic demands, but also by how they cope with uncertainty and the support they receive at home.

Supported by the Lee K*m Kee Family Foundation, Caritas Hong Kong and our Department collaborated on the Study on Hong Kong Children’s Subjective Well-being. Drawing on questionnaires from more than 5,200 Primary 4 to Primary 6 students, together with focus group interviews, the study explores children’s experiences of school, family life and growing up. Dr. Law Yee-man, Moon, Senior Lecturer in our Department, is the Principal Investigator.

The study found that 66% of surveyed children feel overwhelmed by assessments, tests and examinations at school📚. Meanwhile, 59.4% found it difficult to cope with unexpected events and uncertainty about the future 🎯. Some children link their sense of self-worth closely to academic performance, and may lower their hopes for the future to protect themselves from disappointment.📱Online games and short-form video platforms can also offer some children temporary relief from pressure and a greater sense of autonomy.

🏠The findings show that a stable, supportive home can help children feel more confident about the future and better able to manage pressure. Alongside academic progress, it is equally important for children to feel heard, understood and supported at home.

📰The research has received attention from local media, including Sing Tao Headline, i-Cable News and Ming Pao.
