The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland was delighted to attend the 51st Annual Sir Peter Freyer Surgical Symposium last Friday and Saturday at the University of Galway. It was great to meet many RCSI Fellows & Members, Medical Students, Surgical Trainees, NCHD’s and Consultants.

From insightful keynote lectures, insightful posters, our innovative RCSI TeleSurgery event in collaboration with Cornerstone Robotics and more, this year's Freyer meeting brought together the community of surgery 🏥

It was a pleasure to talk to attendees throughout both days on an array of areas including surgical education, training, research, examinations, and more.

With our recent release of our brand-new RCSI CPD Support Scheme Brochure (including 180+ courses from September 2026 to May 2027) we were delighted to hand out physical copies of our brand-new brochure while also talking to NCHDs in Surgery and Emergency Medicine about our upcoming courses.

Lead and deliver a service of excellence in your organisation

Please note applications for our flexible and hybrid micro-credential “Leading and Managing your Organisation and Service” is now open for February 2027 intake.

Delivered by Dr Mary Collins, the aim of this micro-credential is to equip you with the leadership, strategic, financial and people-management capabilities required to lead a clinical department or service effectively, and to support you in applying those capabilities directly to the organisational realities of your own working environment. This micro-credential provides participants with an understanding of the nature of service and the factors that contribute to excellence in leading service in healthcare through lectures, guest speakers, seminars, readings and assignments.

Participants will develop an understanding of the healthcare structures and their competing demands, the development of a culture of service excellence, the various activities involved in the analysis, formulation and implementation of strategic initiatives.

**Application Deadline Extended**- RCSI Basic and Intermediate Surgical Principles and Practice Certificates - September 2026 intake

Please note applications for both our Basic and Intermediate Surgical Principles and Practice Certificates will close this Friday, 28 August 2026 whereby Surgical NCHD's can apply for September 2026 intake (limited spaces).

The RCSI Basic Surgical Principles and Practice Certificate provides a flexible and hybrid programme, specifically designed to support surgical doctors who are not on formal training programmes, by providing structured educational support in-line with the Intercollegiate Core Surgical Curriculum (CST).

The RCSI Intermediate Surgical Principles and Practice is a flexible and hybrid certificate, that aims to enhance your competencies and knowledge, providing you with essential surgical knowledge to support and progress your career.

NCHDs who wish to apply for either certificates must have already applied for our RCSI CPD Support Scheme.
