Welcome to our brand new series, where members and friends of our Alumni Book Club share the stories behind what's on their shelves.

📚Meet Shauna Brennan, who you may have seen around campus working as a library guard at the Old Library here in Trinity. She loves ‘being completely consumed by a book and disappearing into someone else’s world for just a little while.’

We asked Shauna (IG: ) about the books she keeps coming back to:

‘I reread Peter Fox’s Trinity College Library the most, simply because of work. So many tourists are fascinated by the library, and they ask any and every question you can think of! Something I’ve never really had an interest in is sci-fi but when I read Project Hail Mary, I completely fell in love with it. Honestly, if a friend hadn’t told me so many times to read it, I probably never would have picked it up. I’ve recently started Dungeon Crawler Carl too, and again, it’s not something I would have ever normally read, but I’m really enjoying it.’

Autumn brings a change of colour to Trinity's historic campus, where trees from Ireland and around the world line our leafy squares and walkways. Some of the oldest trees on campus have stood here since the 1830s, witnessing generations of students, scholars and visitors pass beneath their branches.

Among the campus's most recognisable trees are the Erman's birches at the Front Gate, planted around 1950 to replace earlier Oregon maples lost after a storm.

Today, these green spaces remain a place for quiet walks, reflection and discovery in the heart of Dublin, offering a moment of calm amid the bustle of city life.

Last week, the Trinity School of Languages welcomed President Catherine Connolly to celebrate 250 years of modern languages at the Hely-Hutchinson Lectures.

Named after Provost John Hely-Hutchinson, who established the Chairs of Modern Languages in 1776, the lectures brought together students, staff, alumni and guests to reflect on the power of language to connect cultures and enrich our understanding of the world.

We were also delighted to welcome members of the Hely-Hutchinson family, whose presence added a special connection to this historic milestone.

The Trinity College Dublin London Dining Club warmly invites alumni to its Michaelmas Term Dinner featuring guest speaker Professor Abeba Birhane.

Professor Birhane's groundbreaking work focuses on AI accountability, helping to ensure that artificial intelligence systems are fair, transparent and responsibly developed. Her contributions have earned international recognition, including inclusion on the TIME100 AI list of the world's most influential figures in AI.

Join us at the Trinity Long Room Hub for a special conversation with celebrated Irish writer Colm Tóibín.

In discussion with Prof David Shepherd (School of Religion, Theology, and Peace Studies, Trinity College Dublin), Tóibín will explore his Booker Prize shortlisted novella Testament of Mary and its operatic adaptation, Testament, which will feature in the Dublin Theatre Festival this October.

Part of the Trinity Arts and Humanities Research Festival 2026, this promises to be a fascinating discussion on literature, adaptation, faith, and storytelling.

What a wonderful evening at the Embassy of Ireland in Berlin last week, bringing together Trinity alumni and friends from across Germany to celebrate community, connection and a remarkable milestone in Trinity's history.

As Trinity marks 250 Years of Modern Languages, we were delighted to hear from Professor Mary Cosgrove, 1776 Professor of German, who shared the fascinating story of modern languages at Trinity and the enduring legacy of the world's oldest continuous modern languages chairs.

The event highlighted the deep and longstanding connections between Ireland and Germany, and the important role Trinity has played in fostering cultural and academic exchange across generations.

A sincere thank you to everyone who joined us, and to the Embassy of Ireland in Berlin for hosting us in such a beautiful setting.

It was a pleasure to reconnect with familiar faces, welcome new members of the alumni community, and celebrate the global Trinity network together.
