The Sino-Russian relationship has become one of the defining geopolitical developments of the twenty-first century, yet its long-term future remains uncertain.

This lecture explores the historical evolution of Russo-Chinese relations, from post-Cold War reconciliation to today's strategic alignment, and examines how the Russo-Ukrainian War has reshaped this partnership

Join us as Prof Richard Sakwa, Emeritus Professor of Politics at the University of Kent, considers the political, economic, and security foundations of the relationship, including energy cooperation, defence collaboration, and shared geopolitical interests.

Against the backdrop of intensifying great power competition, the lecture asks whether the current Sino-Russian alignment can endure growing international pressures and continue to shape the evolving global order.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Professor Sakwa is an internationally recognised scholar of comparative politics, international relations, and political philosophy, with a particular focus on Russian and European affairs. He has held academic appointments at the Universities of Essex, California, Santa Cruz, and Kent. He has published extensively on Russian politics, the changing international order, and East–West relations.

His latest books are The Putin Paradox (Bloomsbury, 2020), Deception: Russiagate and the New Cold War (Lexington Books, 2022), The Russia Scare: Fake News and Genuine Threat (Routledge, 2022), The Lost Peace: How the West Failed to Prevent a Second Cold War (Yale University Press, 2023) and The Culture of the Second Cold War (Anthem Press, 2025). His book The Russo-Ukrainian War: Follies of Empire was published by Lynne Rienner Publishers in March 2026.

China's rapid economic transformation, technological innovation, and expanding global influence have made its development model one of the defining issues in contemporary international affairs.

As Ireland holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2026, discussions on global governance, sustainable development, economic resilience, and international partnerships are timelier than ever.

This roundtable provides an opportunity to examine these issues through the lens of China's evolving role in the international system.

The event brings together leading scholars from Ireland and the United Kingdom to explore contemporary developments in China from interdisciplinary perspectives, including political science, international relations, economics, engineering, and Asian Studies.

Designed as a moderated conversation rather than a series of formal presentations, the roundtable encourages dialogue across disciplines and between academia, policymakers, and the wider public.

Enjoy these shots from our Summer School for Ancient Trans-Himalayan Languages 2026!

From 15–27 June 2026, the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies (TCAS) proudly hosted the Summer School for Ancient Trans-Himalayan Languages (SSATH) 2026, bringing together students and scholars from around the world for two weeks of intensive learning and academic exchange at Trinity College Dublin.

Organised by Dr Lijing Peng under the direction of Professor Nathan Hill, the summer school offered specialist courses in Old Tibetan, Tangut, Yi Script, Reconstructing West Kho-Bwa, and Proto-Gyalrongic, as well as a weekend workshop on Old Burmese.

Participants learned from an outstanding international team of instructors, including Professor Tim Bodt, Dr Joanna Bialek, Dr Yunfan Lai, Professor Kazue IWASA, Dr. Shuya Zhang, and Dr Yue Ji.

Their collective expertise introduced students to the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of the Trans-Himalayan language family. Professor Nathan Hill also participated in the programme, leading discussions during the weekend workshop on Old Burmese.

Lots more happens beyond the classroom!

The summer school fostered an international community of early-career researchers and established scholars, creating opportunities for collaboration, discussion, and the exchange of ideas.

We extend our sincere thanks to Dr Lijing Peng, organising assistant Josiah Medin, all instructors, participants, and supporters for making SSATH 2026 a great success.

We can't wait to welcome the next generation of historical linguists back to Trinity.

A delightful piece of World Cup history!

Centuries ago, samurai dyed their armor undergarments with natural indigo (aizome). Achieving this dark hue required vigorously pounding the fabric—a process called katsu, which perfectly mirrors the Japanese word for "victory." The deep shade was so revered that they became known as kachi-iro: the "winning color."

Japan's team is carrying centuries of history onto the pitch tonight.

A meeting with the Delegation from Yulin City, China has just taken place!

On Tuesday, 23 June 2026, Trinity College Dublin welcomed a senior delegation from Yulin City, Shaanxi Province, China, led by Mr Ma Yuefeng, Mayor of Yulin City.

The delegation was here to explore opportunities for international cooperation in higher education, innovation, and sustainable development.

During the visit, the delegation met with Mr Audrey Crosbie from Trinity Innovation, Professor Nathan Hill, Director of the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies (TCAS), and Ms Niamh Burke, Associate Director of Trinity College Dublin Global.

Amongst the delegation were senior representatives from Yulin's municipal government, development and foreign affairs agencies, high-tech and innovation zones, and leading enterprises in the energy, environmental technology, intelligent manufacturing, and advanced technology sectors.

Our meeting allowed us to exchange views on innovation, international education, research collaboration, and universities' role in supporting sustainable industrial development and emerging technologies.

Both sides discussed potential avenues for future engagement between Trinity College Dublin and institutions and industries in Yulin.

The visit was yet another opportunity for TCAS to foster international partnerships and strengthen academic and institutional links between Ireland and China.
