TCAS Opens 2026/27 Public Lecture Series with Professor Richard Sakwa.

Were you there?

ICYMI - Trinity Centre for Asian Studies (TCAS) opened its 2026/27 public lecture series on 3 September with a lecture by Professor Richard Sakwa, Emeritus Professor of Politics at the University of Kent.

Entitled “Russo-Chinese Relations in a Time of War,” the lecture examined the
historical development of Sino-Russian relations and considered how the Russo- Ukrainian War has reshaped the contemporary partnership between Russia and China.

Professor Sakwa discussed its political, economic and security dimensions, as well as its implications for the changing global order.

The lecture attracted a strong audience from across Trinity and beyond and was followed by a lively Q&A and discussion.

TCAS was delighted to welcome Professor Sakwa to Trinity and to begin the new academic year with an engaging discussion on one of the most significant issues in contemporary international relations.

We're Delighted to share this new Research Spotlight!

Afsana Ferdous has been working on "The Documentation of Rengmitca: A Critically Endangered Language in Bangladesh" - with Supervisor: Prof. Nathan Hill.

Our PhD candidate Afsana Ferdous was recently interviewed in Bangladesh about her ongoing doctoral research on Rengmitca, a critically endangered language spoken in Bangladesh.

In the interview, Afsana discussed the progress of her documentation project, her fieldwork with the few remaining speakers of Rengmitca, the substantial audio and video data she has collected, and the current stages of transcription and linguistic analysis.

She also spoke about the process of developing an appropriate orthography for the language in consultation with its speakers.

Over the past few months, Afsana Ferdous and her research on Rengmitca have been featured in several national newspapers in Bangladesh, drawing wider attention to the critically endangered language and its documentation.

In reporting on Rengmitca, the media have also consistently acknowledged the research's institutional context: the project is being carried out at the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies, Trinity College Dublin, under the supervision of Prof. Nathan Hill, with Afsana’s doctoral research supported by a Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship.

She has received recent media coverage in the following publications too!

The Trinity College Dublin Department of Linguistics is seeking TCD-registered students to serve as native-speaking Language Assistants.

These roles are part of the Trinity Language and Culture Electives during the 2025/26 academic year (French, Irish, Korean, Italian, Spanish).

The role involves assisting language instructors during face-to-face classes for 1–2 hours per week.

Classes are held on Tuesday mornings (09:00–11:00) and/or Thursday afternoons (16:00–18:00).

The rate of pay is € 127.35 per term, per class (€14.15 per hour for a maximum of 9 hours per term, per module).

A Different View of the TCAS China Roundtable ✍️

A quick post about last week’s TCAS China Roundtable: we were delighted to receive many kind messages from audience members sharing their reflections on the event.

One particularly creative response came from artist, writer and photographer Anthony Kelly, who spent the afternoon sketching the conversations as they unfolded.

His drawings capture some wonderful moments from the day; from Ambassador Zhao Xiyuan’s remarks to the lively exchanges between our panellists, as well as a sketch of Trinity College Dublin’s iconic Campanile.

They offer a distinctive and wonderfully personal record of the roundtable.

Anthony described the event as “a great series of conversations”, and we are delighted to share a selection of his sketches here with his kind permission.

Many thanks to Anthony, and to everyone who joined us and helped make the roundtable such an engaging afternoon of conversation and exchange.

Professor Alan O’Connor, Vice President for Global Engagement, Attends TCAS China Roundtable and Meets Chinese Ambassador!

The Trinity Centre for Asian Studies (TCAS) was delighted to welcome Professor Alan O’Connor, Vice President for Global Engagement at Trinity College Dublin, to the TCAS China Roundtable 2026, held at the Trinity Long Room Hub on 2 September.

During the event, Professor O’Connor met with H.E. Mr Zhao Xiyuan, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Ireland. Their meeting provided an opportunity to discuss Trinity’s engagement with China and the importance of strengthening academic and international collaboration.

TCAS greatly values Trinity’s leadership and diplomatic partners' engagement in supporting academic exchange, international collaboration, and dialogue between Ireland and China.

TCAS has just hosted the China Roundtable 2026

On 2 September, the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies hosted “China’s Development Model, the Green Transition, and the Changing Global Order” at the Trinity Long Room Hub.

Chaired by Professor Nathan Hill, Director of TCAS, the event opened with remarks from H.E. Mr Zhao Xiyuan, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Ireland, and brought together scholars from Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, Dublin City University, the University of Galway and the University of Kent.

Across two interdisciplinary panels, speakers explored China’s development model, technological innovation and green transition, alongside questions of governance, international relations, global interdependence and the changing international order.

Many thanks to all our speakers, guests and participants for contributing to a lively and thought-provoking afternoon of discussion and exchange.

Through the TCAS China Roundtable, we look forward to continuing to create opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogue and informed engagement with China and contemporary Asia.

TCAS Alumna Mok Earl shares her reflections on her academic journey and her experience at TCAS, when she was awarded a Full Scholarship for a PhD at Nanjing University!

Congratulations from all of us at the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies (TCAS)!

We are delighted Earl Mok (莫尔), an alumna of the M.Phil. in Chinese Studies, has been awarded a full scholarship to pursue her PhD in Chinese Language and Literature at Nanjing University, China.

Originally from Malaysia, Earl’s academic journey in Chinese Studies has now taken her across three countries.

She completed her bachelor’s degree in Malaysia before coming to Trinity College Dublin to undertake the M.Phil. in Chinese Studies at TCAS.

During her studies at Trinity in 2024–25, Earl received the Eoin and Cliona Murphy Scholarship, which supports students undertaking the M.Phil. in Chinese Studies based on academic merit and financial need.

We know Earl has now arrived in Nanjing and is successfully enrolled at Nanjing University, where she will spend the next four years pursuing her doctoral studies in Chinese Language and Literature.

Earl’s journey from Malaysia to Ireland and now to China reflects the international character of Chinese Studies and the diverse academic pathways available to TCAS graduates. Her progression from postgraduate study at Trinity to fully funded doctoral research at Nanjing University is a wonderful achievement.

Professor Nathan Hill, Director of TCAS, and colleagues at the Centre warmly congratulate Earl on her achievement and wish her every success as she begins this exciting new chapter of her academic career in Nanjing.
