📣 PARTICIPANTS WANTED! 📣

Help us understand how toddlers learn words through play! 🧸🗣️

We are looking for parents and their toddlers aged 24–30 months to take part in a short research study about play and early language development.

✅ We are looking for typically developing children
💬 Children should be primarily exposed to Maltese (they can also be exposed to English)

👉 What does participation involve?
🧩 A naturalistic play session – a 10–15 minute home-based play session with your child using age-appropriate toys
📋 Parent questionnaires – two short questionnaires about your child's language development
🖼️ A picture naming task – a brief activity where your child will be asked to name pictures

📢 We're recruiting! Research Support Officer II (Speech-Language Pathologist)

Want to help shape the future of child speech assessment in Malta? 🗣️🤖

The Department of Human Communications Science and Disorders at the University of Malta is looking for an SLP to join KTT_ASR, a new Xjenza Malta-funded project developing automatic speech recognition for Maltese child speech, building on the eMESA assessment platform.

You'll work with an interdisciplinary team spanning speech-language pathology, AI and human-centred design: collecting speech data from children, supporting ethics and documentation, and sharing results through workshops, publications and even a hackathon!

✅ Master's in Communication Therapy/Audiology
✅ Full-time, up to 24 months
✅ €30,327 per annum

We’re still buzzin’!
The Department of Human Communication Sciences and Disorders (HCSD) at the University of Malta is still buzzing after marking International Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Day on 16 October!
The awareness campaign included the fixing and display of Raising Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (RADLD) posters, sharing information through the University’s Newspoint portal and Campus 103.7 radio, as well as talking to staff and students about DLD. It was a busy time indeed!
The Department of HCSD would like to thank all those who helped us to raise awareness of DLD at the University of Malta campus and beyond.
Special appreciation goes to the Year 2 B.Sc. (Hons) Speech Language Pathology students who helped Prof. Daniela Gatt with the circulation of flyers, stickers and posters on the day. Their smiles, enthusiasm and efforts made our a memorable one.

🌍✨ A wonderful international learning experience for our final-year students!

Yesterday, our final-year undergraduate students had the opportunity to participate in the VIPE Academy Case Study: Mental Health and Young People session facilitated by Dr Rachael Agius and Ms Estelle Zahra.

A huge well done to our students for taking part in this enriching experience! 👏 It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow students from around the world, exchange perspectives, learn from one another’s experiences, and broaden their understanding of mental health in young people.

Experiences like these highlight the value of international collaboration and learning beyond the classroom. 🌎

Are you aged 45–65 and living with a hearing loss? We’d love to hear from you!

An undergraduate Speech and Language Pathology student at the University of Malta, is exploring how hearing loss affects quality of life and everyday communication.

🗣️ What’s involved?
A single interview (45 minutes to 1 hour), online or in person, about your communication, the coping strategies you use, and your experiences with hearing loss.

🔒 Your privacy
All responses are confidential and pseudonymised. Your name and any identifying details are replaced with a code. Participation is completely voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time.
