What if a sensor small enough to fit on a chip could detect everything from the faintest vibrations to powerful shaking?

Researchers in the Chandra Family Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering have developed a chip-based optical motion sensor that combines high sensitivity with a wide measurement range, two capabilities that traditionally require larger, more expensive systems.

Because the technology can be manufactured using processes similar to those used for smartphone chips, it could one day make large, affordable sensor networks possible. Potential applications range from improving natural-disaster warning systems on Earth to studying moonquakes and the internal structure of the Moon or Mars.

The work highlights how photonics, electronics and intelligent signal processing can come together on a single chip to open new possibilities for sensing our world—and others.

Prof. Neal Hall, Texas ECE graduate students Yuqi Meng, qiyun hu, Ehsan Vatankhah, Zihuan Liu and Wei Wang, along with collaborators at Silicon Audio and the University of Arizona contributed to this project.

Are AI Models Working Harder Than They Need to? Prof. Lizy John says weightless neural networks could slash AI’s energy bill.

Much of modern AI runs on multiplication. Neural networks behind everything from generated answers to photo organization and song recommendations perform millions or billions of operations that multiply inputs by learned weights. Lizy K. John thinks that’s more work than the job requires.
