Four CNMS students completed recent internships at Maryland-based companies and agencies show how local opportunities are helping Retrievers build skills, find mentors, and advance discoveries that matter here and beyond.

Junior biological sciences major Magdalen Ruth at the National Institute of Health said, “I’ve just found myself in a great spot with UMBC. I feel really blessed to have had all the opportunities I’ve had. Being able to do these internships has seriously been great.”

On a typical day this summer, you may have started the morning stirring sugar into your coffee. After checking the weather forecast or making a few calls on your cell phone, you may have then logged into secure networks to access work data or conduct financial transactions. And this summer, four UMBC students learned how they could contribute to the complex choreography that lies behind such seemingly simple actions in the modern world.

Reese Finnigan, studying the history of the Soviet Union and learning Russian, developed her archival skills working on The Baltimore Sun collection during her first year in the Master of Arts in Public History program. This year, when looking for summer internship opportunities, Finnigan was excited to find that the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Shapell Family Collections, Conservation and Research Center in Bowie, Maryland—a museum she had tried to secure a curatorial or research internship with for years—was seeking an intern with her exact skill set.

Earlier this summer, a month before the start of fall classes, newly-minted Retrievers were on campus and ready to start working. Part of UMBC’s initiative to scale up work-integrated learning (WIL), more than 100 incoming first-year and transfer students spent a night on campus, connected with an instructor and teaching assistant, and spent a day participating in service on site at five different community partner locations.
