Annie Byrd ’04, emergency health services, M.P.S. ’23, community leadership, began her staff career at UMBC as an executive administrative assistant and she is now the Career Center’s assistant director for employer relations. She attributes her growth as a leader to UMBC’s supportive environment that encouraged members to make an impact in their communities.

This fall, UMBC’s Division of Student Affairs launched the Center for Religion, Spirituality, and Pluralism (CRSP). As part of these new efforts, they hosted a Picturing Pluralism event, a semester-long photography, conversation, and dialogue project that welcomed over 40 UMBC community members for a two-day retreat in mid-October.

When Dolly Parton passed away, fans worldwide shared memories of her movies, albums, and TV shows, as well as her kindness and early support for the LGBTQ+ community. Amy Tondreau, associate professor of elementary literacy in UMBC’s School of Education, remembers Parton as an icon, pioneer, and a role model who lived out her feminist values, “a beacon of kindness, hope, charity, and community” for so many people, but particularly, she sees Parton’s legacy through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Corrie Francis Parks, professor of visual arts, is an inventor of animation techniques whose short films have been screened at major festivals around the world. Her numerous awards and honors now include a major addition: This past summer, she was elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, known especially for the annual Academy Awards.

Mayank Chugh is exploring both questions at once. As an assistant teaching professor in biological sciences and director of UMBC’s Applied Molecular Biology (AMB) accelerated master’s program, he is entering his second year in a role that blends hands-on teaching, program leadership, and research that extends beyond the lab.

UMBC has secured $1.5 million in congressional funding to establish the UMBC Center for Precision Aquaculture, an interdisciplinary effort aimed at revolutionizing land-based fish production through real-time monitoring and smart technology.

The new center brings together faculty and students from UMBC’s marine biotechnology, chemistry and biochemistry, and computer science and electrical engineering (CSEE) departments. The interdisciplinary team will strive to make domestic aquaculture more efficient, healthier for fish, and environmentally responsible—while helping reduce America’s massive seafood trade deficit.
