New OSU Students! Have you registered for your Learnx Doing session? MACO is running two sessions: Sea the Unseen,” where you’ll get an inside look at marine-focused specimens from OSU’s ichthyology and wildlife collections in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences, and “Coastal Connections,” which takes you to Hatfield Marine Science Center to build an ROV, explore marine life and research, and discover ways to get involved at the coast .

Either of these sessions will allow you to experience the ocean and coast-related research, learning, and innovation at OSU. There are limited seats available so register now at beav.es/YYd. See you there!

🌈Oh wait, it actually is all sunshine and rainbows studying at Hatfield in the summer (even when the weather doesn’t always reflect that 🌧️😅)!

Introducing our newest Marine Career Pathway: Marine Mammalogy!

This pathway dives into how students can focus on these charismatic megafauna, including career and academic resources such as undergraduate and graduate courses taught by Marine Mammal Institute faculty, interviews with industry professionals, future graduate training opportunities including the Marine Mammal Graduate Certificate and much more. Explore it at beav.es/marine-careers.

The Marine Career Pathways project was created for students with big interests who aren’t sure how to turn those interests into concrete academic and career steps. This MACO-led project is designed to help prospective and current students move from interest to action as they launch their marine careers.

Each Marine Career topic gives you ideas for building skills, getting experience, and discovering what’s possible by gathering key resources in one place, including:
• Career examples
• Related OSU degrees and courses
• Facilities and certifications
• Internships and scholarships
• Interviews with real professionals in the field

Note: This resource is supplemental to academic advising and should be used in consultation with your major advisor

Let’s take a moment for our summer social media student workers! They make running a social media account look easy, but we’ll let you in on their secret – all it takes is some sugar, spice, and everything nice. 

This summer, Annabelle, Noor, and Thandi created content  and curated posts for MACO in collaboration with Hatfield Marine Science Center to share and support student experiences and opportunities at the coast. They chaperoned field courses, filmed, edited, took photos, conducted interviews, and organized group participation (thank you to all the good sports!)

Summer Session 4 has finally come to an end! Students spent this week presenting research projects, studying for final exams, and spending a few last hours in the field. We’ll miss all of you students and hope your experiences have prepared you for your future marine careers!

🌊Coastal Oceanography (OC 332) made their way down south to Seal Rock to observe the rocky intertidal.

🎤Marine and Estuarine Invertebrate Zoology (Z 461) gave presentations on their group research projects.

🚢Students and interns had the opportunity for a Ship-to-Shore experience with R/V Falkor hosted by and . Participants also explored the Hatfield Visitor Center.

🐚Marine and Estuarine Invertebrate Zoology (Z 461) students competed in the annual Bio Blitz to find and ID the most invertebrates at Seal Rock.

Checkout Nora McCance’s summer as a MACO Intern!

Nora was mentored by the Oregon Coast Aquarium this summer and has been examining visitors’ experiences through the aquarium’s Sandy Coast Gallery. Nora observed visitors in the Sandy Coast Gallery and collected data using a map-based recording approach to determine how quickly visitors moved through the gallery, where they stopped, and how they interacted with the exhibit. Nora also conducted interviews with visitors to identify common themes in visitor attraction and suggestions for improvement.

Nora says, “My favorite parts of the summer have been meeting all the amazing staff at the aquarium, being able to combine my love for marine science with public engagement, having the opportunity to go behind the scenes and shadow each of the different departments here at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and of course, going tide pooling!"

Students are nearly to the end of Summer Session 4! Preparing for the last week, they were busy working on final projects, studying for upcoming exams, and attending the Thursday seminar.

🔊Students in Introduction to Marine Bioacoustics (FW 461x/561x) practiced their analytical and coding skills using RStudio in the classroom and later had the opportunity to tour the UNOLS vessel R/V Roger Revelle.

🐟Ichthyology (FW 315) students got to connect lecture topics with hands-on experience in the lab, where they dissected fish heads and were challenged with the task of finding otoliths.

🎤Students and interns attended Thursday Seminar, “TEK and Tech: Indigenizing Mentorship in Marine Studies,” where they had the chance to speak with panelists about connecting rural communities with marine science opportunities.

As the coastal internships at Hatfield Marine Science Center wrap up in the next few weeks, we would like to share an update on our MACO interns’ projects! Starting with Vanner Johnson:

MACO intern Vanner, who was mentored by the Coastal Monitoring Station this summer, has been busy comparing phytoplankton blooms between the estuary and the open ocean.Day-to-day, he has calibrated, maintained, and installed instruments that measure water quality at the Coastal Monitoring Station facility in Yaquina Bay. Vanner analyzed this estuary sensor data to look for phytoplankton blooms and compared against data collected on cruises aboard OSU's Research Vessel “Pacific Storm” on the open ocean.

Vanner says, “These sailing days have been my favorite part of the summer so far, but any time spent near the ocean (tidepooling, snorkeling, rockhounding, walking the beach) count as highlights in my book!”
