Announcing our 3rd Annual World Ocean Day Photo Contest! The winning photo will be featured on MACO’s social media and in MACO’s upcoming newsletter with a highlight on the winning artist!

Here are the contest rules:
- Eligibility limited to current OSU undergraduate and graduate students.
- Pick your favorite ocean photo taken by yourself. Please limit it to landscapes, wildlife, or candid shots with no identifiable faces. Must be an original photo taken by you.
- Follow our Instagram account and tag us with the photo in your Instagram story.
- Post the story anytime now until 3:00 pm on Thursday, June 4.
- Like this post and tag 2 friends!

Submissions will be collected and reposted by MACO on June 5 for our Instagram followers to vote on. The public's majority vote determines the winning photo!

The winner will be announced on MACO's Instagram stories on Monday, June 8. The MACO office will DM the winner for next steps.

To finish off our series, we have Taylor Eaton from the Small Boat Program (SBP)!

Tune in to hear about what opportunities and resources are available to YOU!
The SBP offers hands-on training as well as manages a fleet of small vessels that are available for students, staff, and partners to check out for educational or research purposes. From volunteer opportunities to training certifications, students have the opportunity to work onboard a research vessel for a variety of projects!

Make sure to visit SBP’s table during MACO’s World Ocean Day Celebration, happening June 5 at 1-3 pm at the MU Brick Walk!

P.S. there will be a surprise vessel attending the World Ocean Day Celebration as well….🤫

It's and we are spotlighting the Innovation Lab (iLab) with Genevieve Coblentz-Strong, iLab Development Engineer!

The iLab at the Hatfield Marine Science Center is a center that provides engineering solutions to marine and coastal issues for not only Hatfield Marine Science Center, but the greater OSU community and general public. The iLab provides hands-on technical education, manufacturing/fabrication capabilities, research assistance, professional development, and design support for issues relating to the ocean and coasts. The iLab facilities include a machine shop, welding shop, electronics lab, and 3D printing.

The iLab also offers paid internships that provide students with hands-on experience relating to the design and development of a prototype!

The iLab has a variety of resources that students can get involved in! Make sure to visit the iLab’s table during MACO’s World Ocean Day Celebration, happening June 5 at 1-3 pm at the MU Brick Walk!

We are excited to share our newest Marine Career Pathway: Maritime Operations!🌊

This pathway dives into how to get aboard and work at-sea, including resources such as the UNOLS MATE Program, Small Boat certification courses, interviews with industry professionals and much more. Explore it at beav.es/marine-careers

The Marine Career Pathways project was created for students with big interests—like working on ships or in aquaculture—but who aren’t sure how to turn those interests into concrete academic and career steps. This MACO-led project is designed to help prospective and current students move from interest → action as they launch their marine careers.

Each Marine Career topic gives you ideas for building skills, getting experience, and discovering what’s possible by gathering key resources in one place, including:
• Career Examples
• Related OSU degrees and courses
• Facilities and Certifications
• Internships and Scholarships
• Interviews with real professionals in the field

Note: This resource is supplemental to academic advising and should be used in consultation with your major advisor.

Make the estuaries your classroom this Fall with OC 434/534 - Estuarine Ecology!

This 3-credit course explores ecological processes in estuarine environments, with emphasis on ecological interactions among organisms and the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nitrogen. Students will synthesize concepts related to geomorphology, estuarine physics and more through a combination of field work, lab work, and a research cruise on the R/V Elakha! Open to all majors!
