Calling all undergrad students! Have you spent hours looking through web pages and faculty directories trying to find marine research labs to get involved with on campus? Well, look no further! We have put together a one-stop-shop for marine-related research at OSU!

Our new Marine-Related Research at OSU page showcases ongoing marine and coastal related research happening across 10 different Colleges at OSU. Save yourself hours of digging: check it out at beav.es/marine-research.

Keep in mind that the labs listed on this page may not currently be accepting undergraduate student workers or volunteers. We encourage you to reach out directly to inquire about opportunities. If a lab isn’t accepting students right now, contact MACO—we’d be happy to help you explore other opportunities! 🌊

Oregon is known for its rugged coastline and wild beauty–but we must remember to explore with caution, especially as King Tide season nears.

In the months of November through January, the Oregon Coast will experience “King Tides” – the highest of the high tides and the lowest of the low tides. The views are spectacular, but the ocean is the most powerful during this time and we must be extra aware of our surroundings.

Looking to add a little ocean to your winter schedule? 🌊 Check out BI 111 – Intro to Marine Life in the Sea: Marine Habitats!

This 1-credit, hybrid field-focused course offers a hands-on introduction to Oregon’s diverse coastal ecosystems, including rocky shores, sandy beaches, mud flats, bays, and estuaries.
Spend a weekend at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center located in Newport, Oregon, exploring these environments while learning about the breadth of marine
science courses and research taking place across Oregon State.

This course is perfect for those interested in dipping their toes into marine biology, trying something new, and learning about the work and student opportunities at Hatfield. Learn more

It’s not every day you see a fish walking around campus...Thanks to all the ocean a-fish-ionados who participated in our MACO ocean trivia! We hope you had fun learning some new ocean facts and winning a fun keychain.

This past Saturday, ENSC 221 – Environmental Field Studies – visited Hatfield Marine Science Center to put their newly-learned environmental skills, tools, and techniques into action!

Students dissected skates and dogfish to collect age and growth data and learn how scientists study the life histories of marine species. A huge thank-you to the Big Fish Lab for providing the specimens as part of an ongoing research project! Special shout-out to Ava Ivy, research technician and recent OSU graduate, and Alyssa Walter, master’s student, for guiding students through the dissections.

Students also embraced their artistic sides by molding anatomical clay models of skates and making cyanotype art with seaweed, shells, coastal leaves, and other natural materials. Thank you to Liz Birdwell, Hatfield’s new Artist in Residence, for leading this activity!
