.:: 🇳🇴 WMU at the NORSMA Conference 🇳🇴 ::.

Offir Romero Castro (PhD Candidate) is representing us at the 12th Conference of the Nordic Research Network on Special Needs Education in Mathematics (NORSMA), taking place today and tomorrow at the University of Oslo in Oslo, Norway.

During the conference, Offir is engaging with scholars from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, and the United States on trending disability studies in mathematics education.

We are so happy to share that Elisha Hall (PhD Candidate in our program) is engaging as a Postgraduate Researcher (Visiting) for five months in the School of Education, Communication, and Language Sciences at Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

During this academic placement, Elisha will be learning multimodal (verbal and nonverbal) conversation analysis to assist with her dissertation titled "The Silent Language of Teaching Mathematics in Higher Education: Understanding Teacher Nonverbal Communication."

Elisha, we are very glad for you that you have this great opportunity. We wish you all the success and look forward to welcoming you back home!

She gave a wonderfully informative and inspiring talk about her research and was honored at the College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Achievement Award Luncheon today.

Congratulations to PhD student Shekira Edgar on her first journal publication, Amplifying Student Voice for Authentic Belonging! Please join us in congratulating her on this important accomplishment. On Monday we welcomed the new academic year and new members of our WMU math department community with a kickoff luncheon with mathematical games and puzzles!

We got to know each other and also got to preview a small sample of the activities we will have at the Kalamazoo Math Carnival this coming November 21st, an event organized by math department faculty member, Dr. Mariana Levin and hosted by the WMU Mathematics Department.

Looking forward to a wonderful year ahead!

🇮🇩 🇺🇸.:: Pujiyanto's Dissertation Defense ::. 🇺🇸 🇮🇩

On July 23rd, Pujiyanto successfully defended his dissertation titled "Developing Symbol Sense: An Analysis of Students’ Reading Through Symbols of Algebraic Equations in a Developmental Mathematics Course."

Puji has markedly supported research and teaching on student algebraic symbol sense during his doctoral journey, impacting multiple classroom spaces in our department and beyond.

Congratulations to Dr. "Puji"!!! We are so thrilled with the amazing work you have done, and we are looking forward to seeing your upcoming professional achievements and contributions to our field.
