As the flagship university of our state, we stand alone as the only College of Music in Tennessee and the Southeastern Conference, and one of the select few standalone music colleges nationwide among state universities. Our College offers a diverse range of professional concentrations, providing students with unparalleled opportunities to delve into music through the lenses of analysis, business, composition, conducting, education, musicology, performance, and technology. In a new article for The Strad, alumnus Oleksii Hamov, who studied in Professor Miroslav Hristov’s violin studio, introduces performers to two rarely heard Ukrainian violin sonatas. Drawing from his doctoral research, he examines what makes these works distinctive and what they demand from the musicians who perform them.

From Music Vols to music educators 🎶

Five University of Tennessee alumni are helping shape the award-winning arts programs at Bearden High School, recently named the 2026 Tennessee Arts Academy Arts Rich High School of the Year.

Megan Christian, James Wilson, and Steven Brown are Natalie L. Haslam College of Music alumni, while Lauren Houston Andrejko and Katie Norwood Alley are graduates of UT’s College of Arts and Sciences. Together, they are bringing their UT experiences into Bearden’s band, choir, and theatre programs and helping create transformative opportunities for the next generation of artists.

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate Professors Denin Slage-Koch and Alexander van Duuren, inaugural recipients of UT’s Ascent Program for the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences! The new funding initiative supports ambitious, transformative projects with awards of up to $50,000 over three years.

Van Duuren’s project aims to bring a blockbuster film screening with live accompaniment by the UT Symphony Orchestra to a Knoxville venue in 2027. Slage-Koch will record Twang, a genre-spanning album of his original music featuring internationally recognized musicians, in Nashville. Ascent funding will help introduce the album to broader national and international audiences.
