The Humanities Center serves nine arts and humanities departments and the UTK campus as well as our regional and national partners. We connect researchers and provide funding initiatives, public engagement events, lectures, workshops, reading series, and faculty and graduate student fellowships.

Public Books Circle, a program free to all adult readers, is hosted by the Denbo Center for Humanities & the Arts. Public Books Circle meetings are held in person at the Denbo Center (in the Cherokee Mills building), on Sutherland Avenue in Knoxville.

Last week, DCHA Director Amy Elias and Associate Director Katie Burnett took part in the a2ru conference, "How We Thrive: Arts, Health, and Human Flourishing," at the University of Memphis. As an integrative community arts organization, a2ru fosters collaboration between institutes of higher education and community arts programs. While at the conference, Drs. Elias and Burnett had the opportunity to participate in workshops, panels, and performances that highlight the connections between arts disciplines and health sciences.

The Denbo Center for Humanities & the Arts (DCHA) at the University of Tennessee seeks submissions for its inaugural conference, “Speculative Souths,” which will take place June 10-12, 2027 in Knoxville, TN.

“Speculative Souths” is a symposium that will redirect past regionalist studies of the US South with a transformative focus on “speculative representation,” a way of creatively reimagining identity and place as sites of possibility—building from the past but attuned to the developments of the present and needs of the future. The US South has long been a space upon which others project fantasies of national and regional identity, heroic mythologies of resistance, or nostalgic ideas of “American” identity. Rarely has it been considered a space from which progressive and future-oriented narratives about place and identity emerge and develop. By contrast, the interdisciplinary symposium “Speculative Souths” will consider the US South as a generative space of imagination and possibility.

Faculty Fellow Emma Schroeder (History) presented "Ecological Domesticity: Women’s Feminist, Technological Activism and the Politics of Planetary Care" for a Chandler Seminar. The seminars ask fellows to present the research they have been undertaking during their residencies at the Denbo Center, followed by roundtable discussions and critical feedback.

Chandler Seminars have been made possible by the generous donations of DCHA friends Atty. John Chandler and Elizabeth Chandler.
