Our Monthly Member Highlight is from Jewel Vanderhoef:

"I first started in OLLI when I was taking enrichment classes under the Donovan Program so it is hard for me to remember where one program left off and the other began. However, in the OLLI program I was very impressed by the instructor and the content of the class.

I love finding out how things work, how things come to be and why things are as they are. And OLLI classes answer all these questions.

What a variety! How knowledgeable the instruction! Instructors offer a professional background and/or a tremendous interest in the topics they teach.

They are the reasons I have been an OLLI member since its inception at UK. This program answered many of my questions about "what am I going to do?" when I retire."

It's no secret music plays a big role in the world of OLLI at UK. From huge chorus concerts to fun ukulele courses, our lifelong learning community knows the value of singing and performing music, which fosters socialization and human connection. We have also featured talented musicians at our events, such as The Lex Quartet and world-renowned jazz artist, Kandace Springs, bringing unforgettable live concerts to our members. Whether it's in a concert hall or a classroom, let's share the wonder of music as we begin a new semester of lifelong learning!

We have multiple SIGs (Shared Interest Groups) that still have spots open. A SIG is a group of OLLI members who share a particular interest. SIGs may evolve from an OLLI class whose members want to continue to explore a subject on their own, share an interest or an experience. This includes everything from book clubs, writer groups, playing bridge, astronomy, and more. OLLI members have exclusive access to these many kinds of SIGs, and at no additional cost to register for!

Here are SIGs that currently have openings available:

- The Human Domino Effect SIG

- Banned Books SIG

- International Classics SIG

- Superb Sleuths SIG

- Beginning Bridge SIG

- Bridge: Advanced Bidding SIG

- Bluegrass Music Education SIG

In a few weeks, we will kick off our Donovan Forum Series with a community lecture by Eileen Dallaire, Executive Director for the Primate Rescue Center, Inc Learn about the mission of this wonderful organization that provides lifetime care to monkeys and chimpanzees in central Kentucky.

Last week, we had nearly 300 visitors at our Fall Lexington open house event, held at Central Baptist Church Lexington. Here's some photos from the tremendous event: dedicated OLLI volunteers helping with new member sign-ups, terrific displays for various courses (especially for the "Dinosaurs" class!), lifelong learners connecting with one another, and more. Thanks to all that attended and helped make this a successful event!

There are still many courses to choose from, in categories such as technology, culture, wellness, history, literature, performing arts, science, and more! This also includes all upcoming Donovan Forums. Zoom options available for select courses.
