Last week, U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited the College of Veterinary Medicine to learn more about K-State’s innovative work in veterinary education, research, and patient care.

Drs. Brad White and Isabelle Stamm and BCI grad student Taynah Franca showcased the impact of ultrasound technology and industry partnerships, including Butterfly Ultrasound, and how these tools are being integrated into teaching, research, and service.

Great conversations, shared expertise, and new connections!

BCI was pleased to welcome Dr. Selwyn Headley to campus. Originally from British Guiana, Dr. Headley’s career has taken him across Brazil and Finland before returning to Brazil as a Professor of Pathology in Paraná State. His work focuses on Bovine Respiratory Disease in feedyard cattle, and we were grateful for the opportunity to exchange ideas with a fellow researcher dedicated to improving cattle health.

What do cattle breeds, ear tags, and roping all have in common? They were all part of the fun at K-State Grandparents University 2026! 💜

BCI graduate student Maddie Mancke introduced grandparents and grandchildren to the beef industry through engaging, hands-on activities that highlighted animal identification, cattle breeds, and the importance of beef cattle in agriculture. It was a great opportunity to share agricultural science while helping families create lifelong K-State memories.

KSU Veterinary Research Scholar Jake Boley (DVM Class of 2029) is working this summer on a project called “Improving cow herd sustainability modeling by developing simulated cow fertility genotypes” with mentor Dr. Phillip Lancaster, MS, PhD, Assistant Professor, Beef Cattle Institute. Jake says "This project has been an amazing opportunity to learn more about beef production systems and the numerous factors that influence cow fertility. I am super grateful for this experience and have gained valuable skills that will benefit me for my life to come.” Jake is receiving generous funding this summer from the Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Scholars Program and the KSU CVM Office of Research. Amazing work, Jake!
