🌟 WEEK 12: WEEKLY MATHS TALK 🌟

📄 Title: Three angles on tropical geometry
📣 Speaker: Prof. Stephan Tillmann

Abstract: What happens when you replace addition with taking a maximum and replace multiplication with addition? This talk will describe three
scenarios where these operations arise naturally. They fall under the umbrella of “tropical geometry”. This is a field that developed in several
areas of mathematics and computer science independently. I begin with a classical source of tropical geometry: Newton’s work on “sketching”
polynomials. I will then describe Bergman’s somewhat unexpected approach of using tropical geometry to answer questions in group theory. I’ll end with an outline of different, but related, viewpoints that are useful in
describing limits of geometric objects.

🗓️ DATE: Thursday 21st May
⏰ TIME: 1pm
📍 LOCATION: F11.01.144.Chemistry Building.Chemistry Lecture Theatre 2

Bio: Stephan ‘Tillus’ Tillmann studied mathematics and philosophy in Mainz (Germany) and Melbourne (Australia). After graduating with a doctoral thesis in low-dimensional topology from the University of Melbourne, he spent three years each in Montreal, Melbourne and Brisbane. Tillus joined the University of Sydney in 2011 and currently holds the position of Professor of Geometric Topology. Topology is the mathematical study of the shape of spaces. Tillus’ research encodes different ways in which geometry can be assigned to abstract spaces, and uncovers new geometric and topological information from the encoding. For his work he has been awarded the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2021. As Executive Director of the Sydney Mathematical Research Institute, Tillus looks after a large international visitors program of mathematical scientists to institutions across Australia and public outreach programs connected to mathematical research.
