【🔥 Burn Awareness Education Day Successfully Concluded
預防燒燙傷教育日圓滿舉行】

Thank you to everyone who joined the Burn Awareness Education Day on 25 October 2026 at PMQ, Central. The event brought together members of the public, healthcare professionals, firefighters and volunteers to promote greater awareness of burn prevention, first aid, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Professor Velda Chow, Director of Burn Unit at Queen Mary Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery, HKUMed, delivered the welcoming remarks and officially opened the event. Throughout the afternoon, participants enjoyed an engaging programme featuring educational drama performances, expert talks on burn care and first aid, patient sharing sessions, and interactive booth activities. We were also honoured to welcome Professor Chung-Mau Lo, Secretary for Health of the HKSAR Government, and Dr Teresa Li, Cluster Chief Executive of the Hospital Authority Hong Kong Island Cluster, who joined us in supporting this meaningful community initiative.

Co-organised by the Department of Surgery, HKUMed, the Burn Unit of Queen Mary Hospital, and the Hong Kong Fire Services Department, the event highlighted the importance of burn prevention through community education and collaboration. Together, we can continue to raise awareness, promote safety, and support those affected by burn injuries.

2026年10月25日於中環 PMQ 元創方舉行的「預防燒燙傷教育日」已圓滿結束。衷心感謝所有市民、醫護人員、消防人員、義工及參加者踴躍支持，共同推廣燒燙傷預防、急救處理、治療及復康的重要知識。

活動由港大外科、瑪麗醫院燒傷中心及香港消防處聯合舉辦。瑪麗醫院燒傷中心總監兼港大醫學院外科學系臨床副教授周令宇教授於開幕禮致歡迎辭，為活動揭開序幕。參加者透過消防安全教育話劇、燒傷護理及急救專題講座、病人分享環節，以及互動攤位活動，加深對燒燙傷預防及護理的認識。我們亦十分榮幸邀請到香港特別行政區政府醫務衞生局局長盧寵茂教授，以及醫院管理局香港島醫院聯網總監李德麗醫生親臨支持。

透過公眾教育、社區參與及跨界別合作，是次活動進一步提升大眾對燒燙傷預防的關注及安全意識，讓我們繼續攜手推廣燒燙傷防護知識，關愛燒傷患者，共同建設更安全、更健康的社區。

【乳癌篩查好重要及早發現擔心少】

乳癌是本港女性最常見的癌症，每13名婦女中有1人有機會在一生中患上乳癌。隨著醫學進步，乳癌可以透過篩查及早發現，及早治療，加上現時的基因檢測技術，亦大大提高了遺傳性乳癌的治癒率。

港大外科臨床教授鄺靄慧教授接受香港電台節目《醫生與你》專訪，為大家拆解關於乳癌的迷思，以及分享治療乳癌的最新的冷凍治療和外科機械臂手術，讓大眾更了解這個疾病。

【BIOCHINA South China 2026: Professor John Leung’s Team Wins GBA MedBridge Award】
Congratulations to Professor John Leung and his team on another remarkable achievement at BIOCHINA South China 2026!
As one of the HKUMedXelerate 2026 Top 10 Projects, the team participated in the HKUMedXelerate 2026 Top 10 Live Pitch held in Guangzhou on 10 October 2026. BIOCHINA South China 2026 brought together more than 30,000 registered participants, 400 exhibitors, and 900 speakers, serving as a vibrant platform for biomedical innovation and collaboration.
At the event, the team showcased their pioneering deep-tech innovation to an audience of industry leaders, investors, and regional partners from across the Greater Bay Area. Their project, “Histology at the Operating Table: Cancer Diagnosis within 10 Minutes” (手術台上的組織學：在十分鐘內診斷癌症), demonstrates the potential to transform intraoperative cancer diagnosis and clinical decision-making.
In recognition of their outstanding presentation and innovation, Professor Leung’s team was awarded the BIOCHINA South China GBA MedBridge Award (BIOCHINA華南灣區轉化先鋒獎).
The journey continues as the team prepares to showcase their project in Wuxi and Hangzhou in early December, before taking part in the HKUMedXelerate 2026 Final Pitch in January 2027. We wish them every success in the next stage of their innovation journey.

【HKUMed to launch ACS STOP THE BLEED® Program in 2027】

As part of a new collaboration between HKUMed and the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the internationally recognized STOP THE BLEED® program will be introduced to HKUMed MBBS 1 students in 2027.

This program will equip students with practical, life-saving skills to control severe bleeding in emergencies, disasters, and mass-casualty incidents. Through hands-on training, students will gain the confidence to act in critical situations.

On 28 September 2026, Professor Michael Co, Assistant Dean (Pedagogy & Assessment), HKUMed, represented the Faculty and exchanged an agreement with Professor Jeffrey D. Kerby, Medical Director of Trauma Education Programs at ACS, in Washington, D.C., marking a significant milestone in this partnership. An orientation session was held at HKU on 15 October 2026, featuring a special sharing by Dr Lydia Lam, Trauma Surgeon and Director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program at the University of Southern California.

As a pilot initiative, the first courses will be launched in January and February 2027. Apart from gaining valuable life-saving skills at the early stage of their medical curriculum, participating students will have the opportunity to help strengthen community preparedness by serving as future ACS STOP THE BLEED® instructors for the Hong Kong community.

MBBS I, MBBS (DMS) I, and MBBS (GET) I students are warmly invited to join the program.

【🎗️Highlighting Breast Cancer Exchange and Collaboration in Hong Kong】

As part of the 2026 CBCS & CSOBO Guideline Tour, a delegation of breast cancer experts from Chinese Mainland visited Hong Kong on 11 September 2026 to exchange insights on clinical practice, medical education, and breast cancer management. Hong Kong served as one of the tour's key stops, bringing together specialists from across regions to promote collaboration and the advancement of breast cancer care.

🤝Co-hosted by the China Anti-Cancer Association Breast Cancer Society (CBCS), Chinese Medical Association Society of Breast Oncology (CSOBO), the Division of Breast Surgery, Department of Surgery, HKUMed, and the Hong Kong Hereditary Breast Cancer Family Registry (HKHBCFR), the Hong Kong programme featured both institutional visits and an evening academic symposium.

During the afternoon, the delegation visited the Techmezz at HKUMed, where Professor Jian Yang introduced innovative technologies for anatomy education, including virtual reality learning tools and 3D anatomy systems. The group also toured the Breast Cancer Centre of Tung Wah Hospital and the HKSH Breast Surgery Centre, gaining first-hand insights into Hong Kong's clinical services and multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer care. Professor Billy Cheung played a key role in hosting and coordinating the visits.

The day concluded with the CBCS & CSOBO Hong Kong Symposium at the Park Lane Hotel. Professor Ava Kwong, one of the symposium chairpersons, led discussions on advancing breast cancer management and strengthening professional exchange between Hong Kong and the mainland. The symposium featured presentations and panel discussions covering surgical management, advanced breast cancer treatment, clinical guidelines, and physician training, underscoring the importance of cross-border collaboration in improving breast cancer care.

🌏Through academic exchange and institutional visits, the Tour provided a valuable platform to share experiences, explore future collaboration opportunities, and promote excellence in breast cancer management across the region.

【Best E-Poster Award at ESCP 2026】

Warmest congratulations to Dr. Matthew Wong on receiving the Best E-Poster Award at the 21st Scientific Meeting of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP 2026), held in Prague, Czech Republic.

The international meeting brought together clinicians and researchers from around the world to share ideas, present new research and build connections in the field of coloproctology.

Dr. Wong’s award-winning presentation, “Do Early Onset Colorectal Cancers Fare Better? The Hong Kong Experience”, explored colorectal cancer diagnosed in adults under the age of 50. The study found these cancers have distinct clinico-pathological characteristics, including a predominance of distal tumours, more advanced disease at presentation, more aggressive histological features and different molecular patterns. Encouragingly, with early recognition and multidisciplinary care, treatment outcomes were comparable to those of patients with average-onset tumour, with even better survival observed among patients with stage IV disease.

The study was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Felix Chow. This recognition is a wonderful reflection of the team’s ongoing commitment to meaningful clinical research and better outcomes for people living with colorectal cancer.

【The Division of Urology Introduces Single-Incision Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy
泌尿外科引入單切口機械臂輔助根治性前列腺切除術】

Since introducing single-incision robot-assisted radical prostatectomy last December, the urology team at the Department of Surgery, The University of Hong Kong (HKU), and Queen Mary Hospital has performed 10 procedures.
Prostate cancer is the third most common cancer among men in Hong Kong. Dr Ng Tsui Lin Ada, Head of Urology and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in HKU’s Department of Surgery, noted that radical prostatectomy is one treatment option. The team remains committed to treating the disease effectively while reducing surgical trauma and supporting patients’ recovery.
Dr Tsang Chiu Fung, Consultant in Urology and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in HKU’s Department of Surgery, explained that conventional robot-assisted surgery generally requires several abdominal incisions. The new technique uses a single incision of approximately 4–5 cm in the lower abdomen, through which multiple robotic arms are introduced to perform the resection, control bleeding and place sutures.
Dr Wong Hoi Lung, Associate Consultant in Urology and Honorary Clinical Assistant Professor in HKU’s Department of Surgery, said that, according to the team’s data so far, both operative time and average length of hospital stay have decreased markedly. The team hopes to continue building its clinical experience and collecting data, explore the technique’s use in other procedures, and share its experience with more hospitals so that suitable patients can benefit.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the multidisciplinary clinical team, surgical team, anaesthesia team and nursing team for their dedication and collaboration. We are also grateful to the patients who have shared their treatment experiences. Let us continue working together to advance minimally invasive urological surgery and clinical services in Hong Kong, and offer patients better treatment options.

香港大學外科暨瑪麗醫院泌尿外科團隊自去年12月引入單切口機械臂輔助根治性前列腺切除術以來，已完成10宗手術。
前列腺癌是本港男性第三大常見癌症。泌尿外科主管兼港大外科名譽臨床副教授吳翠蓮醫生指出，根治性前列腺切除術是其中一種治療方案，而如何在有效治療疾病的同時減少手術創傷、幫助病人復元，是團隊持續努力的方向。
泌尿外科顧問醫生兼港大外科名譽臨床副教授曾昭鋒醫生表示，傳統機械臂手術一般需要在腹部開設多個切口，而新技術則透過下腹一個約4至5厘米的切口，讓多支機械臂進入體內，完成切除、止血及縫合。
泌尿外科副顧問醫生兼港大外科名譽臨床助理教授黃海龍醫生指出，根據團隊目前的數據，手術時間和病人平均住院日數明顯減少。團隊期望繼續累積臨床經驗及數據，探索技術在其他手術的應用，並與更多醫院分享經驗，讓合適的病人受惠。
