【HKUSurgery Team Wins Awards at BIOHK2026】

Congratulations to Professor John Leung and his multidisciplinary team on their outstanding success at BIOHK2026.

As one of the Top 10 Projects of HKUMedXelerate 2026, Professor Leung’s team presented their project, “Histology at the Operating Table: Rapid Reversible Clearing and Volumetric Imaging of Intact Specimens” during the BIOHK2026 Live Pitch Competition. On Asia’s premier biotechnology stage, the team had the opportunity to showcase their technology to global investors and industry leaders in order to secure partnerships for future development.

Their exceptional presentation earned them three accolades:
• BIOHK Innovation Spotlight Award (BIOHK 醫療創新焦點獎)
• BIOHK Global Market Potential Award (BIOHK 國際市場潛力獎)
• BIOHK Investor’s Choice Award (BIOHK 投資人之選大獎)

With support from industry partner Dr. Hei Ming Lai, and a multidisciplinary clinical team including Professor Gilberto Leung, pathologists Professor Joshua Li and Dr. Elson Ho, this award-winning project aims to make intraoperative diagnosis fast and accurate, using novel technology that images whole specimens at speed without destruction or irreversible processing.

As part of the HKUMedXelerate 2026 Road Show, Professor John Leung's team will continue their journey at BIOCHINA2026 in October, followed by other flagship events at Wuxi and Hangzhou. We wish them continued success as they take this groundbreaking project to new heights.

【ENT Profession shines through BIOHK2026】

BIOHK2026, the Hong Kong International Biotechnology Conference and Exhibition, concluded successfully last week, bringing together leading researchers, clinicians, and industry professionals to explore the latest advances in biotechnology and healthcare innovation.

We are proud to share that Professor Stephanie Wong from the Division of Otorhinolaryngology was invited to speak at the conference. In her presentation, “Redefining Salvage Treatment in Locally Recurrent Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: Neoadjuvant Immune-Chemotherapy as a Gateway to Surgical Cure”, she highlighted emerging evidence and clinical research that are reshaping treatment strategies for patients with locally recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

She also participated in the panel discussion, “One Protocol, Many Sites - Cracking the Code of Cross-Border Multicenter Trials”, where she exchanged insights with international experts on the challenges and opportunities of conducting multicentre clinical trials across different healthcare systems and regions.

Through research, collaboration, and innovation, we remain committed to advancing evidence-based practice and delivering the highest standard of care for our patients.

【The 12th Masterclass in Urological Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery】

The Department of Surgery, HKUMed, successfully hosted the 12th Masterclass in Urological Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery on 12 September 2026. This annual event continues to serve as a premier platform for innovation, collaboration, and advanced surgical education.

We were honoured to welcome Professor Theodoros Tokas from the University General Hospital of Heraklion, University of Crete, and Professor Li Xuesong from Peking University First Hospital, who shared their expertise and demonstrated the latest advancements in urological robotic and laparoscopic surgery.

This year, we expanded the hands-on training programme in two significant ways. First, participants gained direct experience with two distinct robotic surgical platforms, providing valuable exposure to cutting-edge robotic technologies. Second, we incorporated cadaveric models into the curriculum, offering realistic demonstrations of complex surgical anatomy and enhancing the learning experience.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our distinguished faculty members, industry partners, and participants for their invaluable contributions in making this event a success.

【🌎Division of Urology at the 2nd Academic Annual Meeting of the Male Health Professional Committee of the Guangdong Clinical Medical Association 2026✨】

The Division of Urology participated in the 2nd Academic Annual Meeting of the Male Health Professional Committee of the Guangdong Clinical Medical Association and the 22nd Session of the Masterclass on Microsurgical and Minimally Invasive Andrology, held in Guangzhou from August 23 to 29, 2026.

Dr. Hung Pui Long Wilson chaired a session on "Surgical Treatment for Infertility" in the meeting and delivered a lecture on "Adolescent Klinefelter Fertility Preservation" during the masterclass. Dr. Ho Garm Chi, Justin received a certificate of training for microsurgical and minimally invasive andrological surgeries.

The meeting brought together hundreds of leading experts in andrology from across the country and beyond. It aimed to share the latest research findings, exchange innovative ideas, and foster potential collaborations in andrological surgeries in China. Congratulations to the team for this recognition and for representing our department on the stage of Mainland China in the field of andrology for the first time.

【🔬 Empowering Choice: Advancing Personalized Breast Cancer Care】

✨ As precision medicine continues to reshape cancer treatment, one question remains at the heart of modern oncology: how can care be tailored not only to the disease, but to the individual?

At the Hospital Authority Convention 2026, Professor Ava Kwong shared insights that continue to influence the evolution of personalised breast cancer care. In her presentation, “Empowering Choice: BRCA, Genomic Testing and Personalized Therapy in Breast Cancer Care,” she highlighted the shift from a traditional "one-size-fits-all" approach towards a genomics-driven model of care.

Through genomic profiling, multigene assays, and germline testing, clinicians are now able to tailor treatment strategies to each individual, enabling more targeted therapies, safer treatment de-escalation for low-risk patients, and more informed decisions on long-term risk and prevention.

These advancements are built on nearly two decades of work by the Division of Breast Surgery. In 2007, the team led the establishment of a HKU’s research clinic, which was later transformed into the Hong Kong’s first high-risk genetics clinic for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome, supported by the Hospital Authority. This pioneering effort has strengthened clinical data and research capacity, helping to drive the development of genomic-based breast cancer care.

🎓 Looking ahead, this work continues to shape the future through education. The specialised Genetic Counselling track under the Master of Medical Sciences programme at HKUMed is training the next generation of professionals in medical genomics and psychosocial care. As Admission Advisor, Professor Kwong emphasises that advancing both research and talent development will be key to delivering truly personalised, patient-centred care.

【🌏 Asian Pacific Foregut Society Inaugural Congress】

We are delighted to announce that the Inaugural Congress of the Asian Pacific Foregut Society (APFS) will be held in Hong Kong on 24–25 October 2026.

Bringing together over 20 renowned international and regional experts, the Congress will focus on the latest developments in Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Upper GI Motility Disorders, and Foregut Innovations.
In addition, Pre-Congress Workshops will feature hands-on learning and expert demonstrations in Laparoscopic & Robotic Fundoplication, Esophageal Functional Testing, Foregut Endoscopy.

The Asian Pacific Foregut Society (APFS) is a newly established regional organization working in partnership with the American Foregut Society (AFS) and the European Foregut Society (EFS). Built upon a unique model of joint leadership by gastroenterologists and surgeons, the Society currently includes representatives from Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Singapore, and will further expand its regional footprint to Australia, Malaysia, and the Philippines at this inaugural meeting.

🤝 APFS is dedicated to advancing the field of benign foregut diseases, an area that remains under-recognized across the Asia-Pacific region. Through close collaboration between surgeons and gastroenterologists, APFS aims to establish a vibrant academic platform that enhances professional education, raises public awareness, and promotes regional research and collaboration.
