【In the Media】Professor Dennis Ip, Clinical Professor of Practice, is leading the "HKU Health Companion Programme for Smokers" to address the gap in local lung cancer screening data. The project aims to recruit 15,000 highest-risk individuals aged 50 to 79 with a smoking history of 20 pack-years or more, and to follow up with them over10 years. Professor Ip points out that by combining low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) with artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse pulmonary nodules, the team expects to provide critical data for formulating local screening policies, ultimately achieving early detection, reducing mortality, and promoting prevention over treatment.

此計劃由香港賽馬會慈善信託基金捐助,並由香港大學公共衞生學院及香港大學內科學系聯合主辦,聯同六個非政府組織合作推行。Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the programme is jointly organised by the School of Public Health and the HKU Department of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong, in collaboration with six community NGO partners.

【In the Media】A research team led by Professor Leo P**n and Dr Gu Haogao has developed an innovative global viral genomic blueprint. The study demonstrates that monitoring international travellers at just two key aviation hubs can detect new viral variants days earlier than traditional methods, even when global resources are limited.

📊【Latest Research】A new study led by Professor Tim Tsang, Assistant Professor of the , and Dr Weijia Xiong investigate how individual antibody titres can be used to measure population-level immunity against seasonal influenza. By analysing 41,835 serum samples across six studies in China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and the USA from 2009–2024, the team developed and evaluated four population immunity estimators to improve epidemic preparedness.

🔍 Key Highlights:
✅ Subtype-specific relative changes successfully predicted 57–86% of H1N1-dominant seasons and 100% of H3N2-dominant seasons.
✅ The estimators correctly predicted larger epidemics in 67–83% of cases and smaller epidemics in 90–100% of cases.
✅ In a longitudinal Hong Kong cohort, all four estimators showed negative correlations with subsequent 30-day cumulative incidence for H1N1.

These complementary estimators provide insights to guide seasonal influenza preparedness, surveillance prioritisation, and healthcare resource planning.

The paper is accompanied by an invited Commentary from Professor Jessica Metcalf and colleagues at Princeton University and the University of Oxford.
