We are pleased to share that 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐊𝐚𝐫 𝐋𝐨𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍, Department Chairperson, served as a distinguished panellist at the World Cancer Congress 2026, hosted at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 24 to 26 September.

Professor Chan took part in the panel discussion titled “𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐻𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑡ℎ𝑆𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑦 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑊𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛‘𝑠 𝐶𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝐴𝑠𝑖𝑎 𝑃𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐴𝑐𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐺𝑙𝑜𝑏𝑒”, where she shared comparative, evidence-based perspectives drawn from Hong Kong’s experience. The session examined policy barriers and opportunities spanning prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship care for women’s cancers, and highlighted that even well-resourced health systems continue to face persistent equity gaps across the full care continuum. The panel attracted an engaged audience of approximately 70 participants and fostered robust discussion around practical, equity-centred policy recommendations to improve health outcomes for women throughout the region.

Today marks a milestone occasion: the official launch of the 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚-𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐆𝐃𝐌 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐮𝐦.

✍🏻✋🏻𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲 We were privileged to witness leading specialists and institutions across the region come together with a collective commitment to advancing gestational diabetes mellitus research to benefit women and families throughout the Asia-Pacific.

𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐊.𝐋. 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍: “To improve the understanding, diagnosis and management of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus across the Asia-Pacific through rigorous, collaborative research that reflects the biological and clinical heterogeneity of GDM, generates evidence relevant to Asian populations, and supports more precise, practical and effective care for women during pregnancy and beyond.”

This multidisciplinary network brings together expertise spanning GDM phenotyping, multi-omics technologies, continuous glucose monitoring, clinical trials, digital health, and long-term maternal and child health. Its central objective is to ensure clinical recommendations for Asian women are grounded in evidence derived from Asian populations.

The programme also included regional overviews from East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Oceania, publication insights shared by Dr. Giovanna DEL VECCHIO (BMC Medicine), and an in-depth discussion on continuous glucose monitoring during Session 6.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, The University of Hong Kong, participated in 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, which was hosted by The University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital in Shenzhen on 12–13 September 2026. The department was privileged to engage in this high-profile academic event focused on frontier developments in gynaecological oncology.

Several distinguished faculty members from our department — 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐊.𝐋. 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍, Department Chairperson; 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝐘.𝐒. 𝐍𝐆𝐀𝐍, Emeritus Professor; and 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐚 𝐘𝐮 𝐓𝐒𝐄, Clinical Professor of Practice — were invited as guest speakers to deliver thematic presentations at the conference. Their academic sharing provided professional and authoritative guidance for the event, while fully demonstrating the department’s continuous efforts and fruitful achievements in promoting clinical innovation, academic progression and high-quality patient care in gynaecological oncology.

We extend our sincere congratulations to the three faculty members for their excellent academic contributions and outstanding sharing at the conference. We also express our heartfelt gratitude to the organising committee of The University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital for meticulously organising this enriching and high-impact academic exchange event.

This conference further validates the significant value of cross-institutional academic collaboration in driving the continuous innovation and standardised development of gynaecological oncology clinical services and research. Moving forward, our department will sustain close academic interaction and collaborative knowledge-sharing with peer institutions, to jointly advance the discipline development and optimise patient clinical outcomes.

Cervical cancer remains a major public‑health challenge across the Asia‑Oceania region, particularly within low‑ and middle‑income countries. While cervical cancer is highly preventable, inequities in access to HPV vaccination and screening services continue to persist.
