Professor Karen K.L. CHAN, Chairperson and Clinical Professor of the Department of O&G, was invited to speak at the “GenSHE Initiative – Health Decoded Talk on HPV Testing and Cervical Cancer Screening”, organised by the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), where she shared authoritative medical insights on HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection, cervical cancer aetiology, screening modalities, and prevention measures. The talk garnered positive feedback, with active engagement from participants. 🥰👏🏻

👩🏻‍⚕️💬 During her sharing, Professor Chan highlighted that routine cervical cancer screening paired with HPV vaccination forms a critical safeguard for women’s health. Improving public knowledge about HPV can motivate more women to undergo regular screening, enabling early detection and intervention — and in turn lowering cervical cancer incidence.

HKU O&G expresses sincere appreciation to YWCA for the speaking invitation, as well as all attendees for their enthusiastic participation🫶🏻. Our department is dedicated to advancing women’s health education and research, equipping women with evidence-based health knowledge to make informed, timely decisions on disease prevention and care.

Moving forward, HKU O&G will maintain community partnerships to deliver more public talks and health initiatives, jointly raising awareness on women’s health issues. 🙆🏻‍♀️💖💪🏻

📄 【 𝓝𝓮𝔀 𝓟𝓾𝓫𝓵𝓲𝓬𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷 】✨✨

We are pleased to share that Professor Queenie L.J LI, Associate Professor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, The University of Hong Kong, has published a new systematic review and meta-analysis in Diabetes Care:

“𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐦 𝐃𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐆𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐬: 𝐀 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐚-𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬.”

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) does not end at delivery. For many women, it is an important marker of future risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiometabolic disease. The postpartum period therefore represents a critical window for prevention, recovery, and long-term health promotion.

This review found that postpartum dietary interventions were associated with modest but significant improvements in several intermediate cardiometabolic markers, including BMI, waist circumference, body weight, HbA1c, and insulin resistance measured by HOMA-IR. However, no significant improvements were observed in fasting glucose, 2-hour postprandial glucose, blood pressure, lipid profiles, or inflammatory markers.

These findings highlight the need to move beyond a “one-size-fits-all” approach and toward more personalised, phenotype-driven, and technology-enabled postpartum lifestyle strategies. Future interventions should consider women’s individual metabolic risk profiles, breastfeeding status, BMI, ethnicity, and lived realities during the demanding postpartum period.
