Brian Tang, our BSc graduate and current MSc student, completed an 12-day journey through the Future Global Leaders Programme (FGLP) at Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge! 🌍✈️

"I was incredibly honoured to join the Future Global Leadership Programme at Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge. Over the 12 days, I came away with a much clearer sense of what leadership actually involves, and of how our research can be used to tackle real-world problems and support the Sustainable Development Goals. The panel discussions with scholars and industry leaders were especially useful — they sparked new research ideas and helped me see my next steps more clearly. Along the way, I also made a lot of new friends and got to see different parts of the UK.— Brian 📸🤝

Organised in collaboration with Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge, FGLP is a unique year-long journey designed to equip CityUHK students with leadership skills, global mindsets, and sustainable decision-making frameworks. Students also receive sponsorship for the programme fee, airfare, and accommodation.

The programme aims to train and produce graduates with highly marketable research skills and experiences in a wide variety of advanced chemistry disciplines, such as cosmetic chemistry, catalysis, synthetic chemistry, materials & biomaterials chemistry, analytical & bio-analytical science, computational chemistry, environmental chemistry and chemical biology, to meet local, regional and global demands for R&D specialists in the industrial, commercial, and government sectors.

Graduates are also eligible to pursue higher research degrees in local and overseas universities and research institutions.

2026/27年度港澳中學化妝品配方比賽

誠意邀請熱愛化學的你，參加由香港城市大學（首席及常務副校長室、化學系）、香港化妝品化學師協會 (HKSCC)及香港化粧品同業協會 (CPAHK)共同舉辦的2026/27年度港澳中學化妝品配方比賽，體驗科學實驗的樂趣，將化學知識融入生活！

今年比賽將更具挑戰性！參賽隊伍不再局限於固定產品類別，而是自行設計專屬的化妝品（如潔面乳、護膚乳液、唇膏等）。參賽隊伍將使用大會提供的免費化妝品原料研發配方角逐獎項。勝出隊伍可參與產品試產過程，並獲贈完成品作為紀念品！

參賽資格：
• 港澳地區中學生均可參加
• 每隊由同一學校最多 4 名學生及 1 名指導老師組成
• 每間學校最多可提名 2 支隊伍（大會設有 120 隊上限，詳情請參閱網站）

Hong Kong-Macau Secondary School Cosmetic Formulation Competition 2026/27

Calling all high school students with a passion for chemistry and creativity! The Hong Kong-Macau Secondary School Cosmetic Formulation Competition 2026/27, proudly co-organized by City University of Hong Kong (Office of the Provost and Deputy President, Department of Chemistry), Hong Kong Society of Cosmetic Chemists, and The Cosmetic & Perfumery Association of Hong Kong, is your chance to showcase your skills, experiment with cutting-edge science, and bring innovative ideas to life!

This year, each team will design their own unique cosmetic product from scratch (e.g., facial cleansers, skin-care lotions, or lipsticks) using a set of complimentary cosmetic ingredients provided by the organizers. Winning teams will have the special opportunity to participate in the pilot production process and receive finished products as souvenirs!

Eligibility:
• Open to secondary school students in Hong Kong and Macau.
• Each team may consist of up to 4 students from the same school, and 1 supervising teacher.
• Each school may register a maximum of 2 teams (Subject to a 120-team overall competition cap; see website for selection details).

Led by Professor Kenneth Leung Mei-yee, the study, “A tailored MoS₂ membrane with strong DNA-binding capability enhances aquatic biota detection through environmental DNA metabarcoding”, was published in the leading international journal National Science Review.

The research team coated the surface of a common membrane with an ultra-thin layer of 2D material molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂), enabling the membrane to capture DNA in water more effectively. The breakthrough was proven effective in both controlled laboratory trials and field tests.

Professor Leung noted that the membrane is cost-effective, simple to prepare and is expected to find future applications in marine conservation, ecological surveys and long-term environmental monitoring. It is particularly suitable for use in marine areas rich in biological resources but difficult to survey.

Professor Huang Bolong is also a corresponding author of this study.

梁美儀教授領導的研究團隊成功研發出一種新型官能化濾膜，大幅提升海洋生物環境DNA的採集與檢測效率，提供更靈敏可靠的技術手段進行海洋生物多樣性監測。有關研究成果「DNA結合能力強大的特製MoS₂濾膜可透過環境DNA代謝條碼技術提升水生生物群落的檢測效能」早前於國際頂尖學術期刊《國家科學評論》中發表。

研究團隊在普通濾膜表面塗上一層超薄的二維材料二硫化鉬（MoS₂），使濾膜能更有效地捕捉水中的DNA。此新型濾膜在實驗室與實地測試中，均顯著提高魚類環境DNA的檢測靈敏度。

梁教授表示：濾膜製備簡單、成本低廉，可直接用於現有的水樣過濾流程。未來可望應用於海洋保育、生態調查及長期環境監測，特別適合用於生物資源豐富但調查困難的海域。

化學系黃勃龍教授也是有關研究的通訊作者之一。

Prof. Xu Jijian was named 2026 Asian Young Scientist Fellow. He is the only scholar from Hong Kong among the 12 young scientists selected across Asia this year.

The AYSF Committee acknowledges Prof. Jijian Xu's research focusing on advanced battery materials and electrolytes for sustainable energy technologies. AYSF would like to support his research on reversible multi-electron conversion in Chalcogen cathodes. Prof. Xu will receive US$100,000 over two years to support their research, along with participation in the AYSF annual conference and academic activities, and access to a network of young scientists across Asia and the world.

Prof. Xu has received several awards and honours for his work, including the 2025 Croucher Innovation Award, the 2024 “Elite Youth” Award from the Chinese Chemical Society, the Materials Today Rising Star Award, the Advanced Science “Rising Stars” recognition, and the Battery Division Postdoctoral Associate Research Award from The Electrochemical Society.

徐教授獲選為2026年度「亞洲青年科學家基金計畫」研究員，同時是本年度12位獲選的青年科學家中，唯一來自香港的學者。

「亞洲青年科學家基金計畫」評選委員會高度肯定徐吉健教授在電池化學方面的研究成果，並支持他進一步研究可逆多電子轉換反應。徐教授將在兩年內獲得10萬美元研究資助，並可參與計畫的年度會議及各項學術活動，加入連系亞洲與全球青年科學家的學術網絡。

徐吉健教授曾獲2024年中國化學會「菁青化學新銳獎」及2025年裘槎基金會「裘槎麥德華前瞻科研大獎」等多項獎項。
