Prof. Xu Jijian was named 2026 Asian Young Scientist Fellow. He is the only scholar from Hong Kong among the 12 young scientists selected across Asia this year.

The AYSF Committee acknowledges Prof. Jijian Xu's research focusing on advanced battery materials and electrolytes for sustainable energy technologies. AYSF would like to support his research on reversible multi-electron conversion in Chalcogen cathodes. Prof. Xu will receive US$100,000 over two years to support their research, along with participation in the AYSF annual conference and academic activities, and access to a network of young scientists across Asia and the world.

Prof. Xu has received several awards and honours for his work, including the 2025 Croucher Innovation Award, the 2024 “Elite Youth” Award from the Chinese Chemical Society, the Materials Today Rising Star Award, the Advanced Science “Rising Stars” recognition, and the Battery Division Postdoctoral Associate Research Award from The Electrochemical Society.

徐教授獲選為2026年度「亞洲青年科學家基金計畫」研究員，同時是本年度12位獲選的青年科學家中，唯一來自香港的學者。

「亞洲青年科學家基金計畫」評選委員會高度肯定徐吉健教授在電池化學方面的研究成果，並支持他進一步研究可逆多電子轉換反應。徐教授將在兩年內獲得10萬美元研究資助，並可參與計畫的年度會議及各項學術活動，加入連系亞洲與全球青年科學家的學術網絡。

徐吉健教授曾獲2024年中國化學會「菁青化學新銳獎」及2025年裘槎基金會「裘槎麥德華前瞻科研大獎」等多項獎項。

Prof. Fan Zhanxi’s project awarded RGC Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) 2025/26

A project led by Professor Zhanxi FAN, titled “Electrosynthesis of high-value organonitrogen compounds via C-N coupling: from catalyst design to cell engineering”, was awarded funding of HK$ 4.8 million from the Research Grants Council (RGC) under the Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) 2025/26.

Traditional production of these essential chemicals, such as urea (>180 million tons annually) and cyclohexanone oxime (key intermediate for nylon-6), relies on energy-intensive thermochemical routes involving fossil fuel-derived feedstocks under harsh conditions.

Electrosynthesis using renewable electricity offers a transformative pathway to produce high-value organonitrogen compounds from abundant small molecules like carbon dioxide and nitrate, fundamentally changing how we approach chemical manufacturing. This project presents a comprehensive strategy by integrating catalyst design, mechanism study, and cell engineering, aiming to provide crucial technological foundations for sustainable chemical manufacturing.

香港城市大學的海洋動物影像研究組一直致力結合「法證醫學」和「影像解剖」，建立「海洋 CSI」，為受威脅的海洋生物發聲！

研究組將於8月22日（星期六）出席香港科學館的【科學為民服務巡禮2026】，分享過去十多年運用頂尖放射診斷技術（例如電腦掃描 🩻），無創剖析鯨豚和海龜的生活史、病理及死因，追蹤船隻撞擊🚢、漁業誤捕🪝等人為威脅，並將法證數據轉化為海洋保育的實質力量！💪🏼

No. 1 in Hong Kong in Nature Index 2026 Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Supplement

CityUHK ranked 1st in Hong Kong and 41st worldwide in the latest “Nature Index 2026 Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Supplement”. The ranking evaluates institutions based on the articles shared in top journals in the nanoscience and nanotechnology fields in 2025. CityUHK achieved an Article Share of 81.19 and an Article Count of 256.

CityUHK was also ranked 16th in Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2025 and 8th in U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Subject Rankings 2026–2027 in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology globally, marking CityUHK the only university in Hong Kong ranked among the global top 50 across three reputable international rankings.

CHEM Global Research Assistant Professor Prof. Yang Jiarui has been listed on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2026 list in the Healthcare & Science category.

Prof. Yang’s research focuses on the design and construction of efficient electrochemical systems, aiming to deepen understanding of the relationship between structure and activity in electrocatalytic processes. It has been cited over 7,000 times thanks to research papers published in journals including Angewandte Chemie, Nature and Nature Communications and holds two patents in this area.

Project led by Prof. Zhang Hua received Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS) Funding

Prof. Zhang’s project “Novel Unconventional Cu-based Catalysts for CO₂ Conversion towards Scalable Production of Value-added Chemicals” secured HK$39.64 million under the TRS.

The project focuses on frontier developments in green technology and clean energy. It integrates AI-guided catalyst design with unique Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials (PEN) technology to synthesise novel catalysts, efficiently converting waste carbon dioxide into high-value chemicals, such as ethylene and ethanol, at a scalable industrial level.

12th Hong Kong University Student Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition

Chemistry students won 5 awards, including a First Prize, a Second Prize, a Third Prize, and two Merit Prizes, in the 12th Hong Kong University Student Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition, organised by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association.

The 12th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition is a platform for university students to demonstrate their creativity and the impact of their research by tackling real-world challenges through interdisciplinary innovation.

Congratulations to Prof. YE Ruquan on winning the 2026 ACS Nano Lectureship among competitive nominees from around the world.

Presented by ACS Publications and the American Chemical Society, the ACS Nano Lectureship recognises early-career investigators who have already made substantial contributions to their fields and are helping to shape the future of nanoscience. Prof. Ye is the first in China to win this award.

Prof. Ye and other laureates will deliver their lectures at the ACS Nanoscience Forum in Seoul 30 July 2026.
