Business is a long established discipline in the College, having been formed as a School of Commerce in 1925 and transformed into the School of Business in the sixties. The School’s mission is to educate the most able undergraduates, postgraduates and experienced managers, providing each with the best disciplinary competence in management as well as a critical and inquiring understanding of organisations. Across our postgraduate programmes, students learned alongside classmates from around the world, collaborated on real business challenges, connected with employers and alumni, developed new ideas and built relationships that extended far beyond the classroom.

Recently, Trinity College Dublin's PhD researchers visited Google's Dublin office as part of Google Tour: Academia Meets Practice, a Part-Time Officer Postgraduate Research initiative under TCD Students' Union (TCDSU).

As a long-standing supporter of PhD initiatives, Trinity Business School was delighted to support the event by hosting a pre-tour gathering for the researchers before they made their way to Google's European headquarters. Ruth O'Leary, on behalf of the Trinity Business School Careers team, addressed the group, offering encouragement and insights as they prepared to connect with industry professionals.

The visit gave researchers the opportunity to explore how the analytical, problem-solving and research skills developed during a PhD translate into industry. Through conversations with Google professionals, participants gained valuable insights into career pathways beyond academia, innovation in practice, and the broad impact of doctoral research.

The experience also brought together PhD researchers from across disciplines, creating opportunities to network, share perspectives and build new connections.

A sincere thank you to TCDSU for leading this excellent initiative, to Google Dublin for hosting such an engaging visit, and to everyone who helped make the experience such a meaningful one for Trinity's PhD community.

As generative AI becomes increasingly embedded in higher education, are universities asking the right questions?

In a new article for The AI Journal, Trinity Business School’s Dr Eimear Nolan and Professor Dirk Lindebaum of the University of Bath look beyond concerns about cheating and assessment to examine a deeper issue: how AI is reshaping the production, ownership and governance of knowledge.

They argue that universities must consider how growing reliance on AI could affect independent thought, critical judgement and our relationship with knowledge itself.

On Monday evening, colleagues, friends and family gathered to celebrate Professor Gerard McHugh and mark his retirement after an extraordinary 41 years of service to Trinity Business School.

The occasion was thoughtfully organised by Una Hennigan, and Dr Norah Campbell delivered a memorable speech that captured Gerard's remarkable contribution to the School, the University and the many people whose lives he has influenced.

Gerard's career at Trinity has been defined by leadership, vision, dedication and an unwavering commitment to generations of students whom he has taught, mentored, supported and inspired.

As former Head of Trinity Business School, Gerard played a central role in shaping the School's development and ambition. He was also instrumental in inspiring alumni and friends of the School to support the philanthropic vision for the new Trinity Business School building, helping to create a world-class home for business education, research, innovation and engagement.

An outstanding and award-winning educator in accounting and finance, Gerard has made a lasting contribution to academic life at Trinity. His impact is reflected in the many students, colleagues and alumni whose learning, careers and lives he has helped to shape over the years.

Gerard now serves as Pro-Chancellor of Trinity College Dublin, one of the highest honours the University can bestow, reserved for distinguished academics who have made exceptional contributions to the College throughout their careers.

On behalf of everyone at Trinity Business School, we extend our deepest thanks to Gerard for his exceptional service, leadership and commitment. We wish him every success in this next chapter.

Trinity Business School alumni meet-up in Singapore

We were delighted to join fellow Council on Business & Society alliance member schools at a Global Alumni Meet-Up in Singapore last week, hosted by ESSEC Business School Asia-Pacific.

Representing Trinity Business School, Associate Professor Dr Yufei Huang welcomed alumni Ian Chen and Rakhi Verma.

The evening explored the Singapore Green Plan 2030, sustainability ambitions in South East Asia, and the role of business in building a greener future.
