We were pleased to welcome Virginia Tech College of Engineering Dean Warren Dixon to MLSoC last month for a visit with our team! During his visit, Dean Dixon met with researchers Abiola Akanmu and Nazila Roofigari-Esfahan to learn more about the impactful research underway. We also held a small reception in Bishop-Favrao Hall for him to meet faculty and staff.

Thank you, Dean Dixon, for taking the time to visit and engage with our community. We look forward to future opportunities to work together to shape the future of the built environment!

Through CEM 3074: Global Design & Construction for Sustainable Development, you’ll work alongside community members to build sustainable homes, supported by a local nonprofit. Develop teamwork, leadership, and project management skills while exploring global housing challenges and learning across cultures.

Open to all Virginia Tech students and fulfills Pathways 6D for most majors. Check with your advisor and apply by December 1 through the Virginia Tech Global Education Office.

Recently, the Associated Schools of Construction Heavy Civil Team toured the Virginia Tech Montgomery Executive Airport as part of its preparation for the upcoming ASC Region 2 Competition.

Thank you to Hunter Boniface and Jon McCalmont of Parrish & Partners who traveled from Charlotte to lead a behind-the-scenes discussion on airport design and construction while guiding students through the airport's recent apron expansion.

Building construction senior Ramsey Wondersek coordinated the visit and reflected on what they learned, "Our site visit with Parrish & Partners gave the team access to a wealth of knowledge and presented the opportunity to see an airport site up close. This ability to walk through the recent apron expansion allowed us to relate the conversations that we have had in the classroom to a real-world example."

Nifemi Idowu, a junior in building construction, added, "We learned so much about airport construction and will incorporate that into our competition strategy. The road to the competition so far has been full of experiences like this that enable us to put our best foot forward. We are so grateful for the support."

Meet Riley Maynard, a building construction sophomore who has spent the past several months gaining hands-on experience as a project engineer intern with Skanska USA.

Over the summer, Riley supported construction activities on the UVA Manning Institute of Biotechnology project in Charlottesville. This semester, she continues building her experience on Virginia Tech's Mitchell Hall project, where she assists with progress photos, environmental tracking, RFIs, submittals, LEED documentation, and project coordination using Procore, Bluebeam, and Excel. "The best part of my internship has been the people I have worked with," Riley said. "Everyone has been willing to answer my questions, teach me new things, and help me become more confident in the construction field."

Her advice for students interested in internships? "Remember that it is okay not to know everything. Put yourself out there, make connections, and show people that you are willing to learn because that can lead to opportunities you may not expect."

Members of our Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) competition teams recently toured a W.M. Jordan Company jobsite for a firsthand look at how construction teams solve real-world challenges.

Recent Construction Engineering and Management graduates Marissa Avalos and Makayla Lusk, along with Building Construction alumnus and project manager Brandon Renick, led the tour. Students learned about project sequencing, site logistics, design changes, phased turnover, and coordination across multiple buildings.

For the students preparing for this year's ASC competition, the experience brought course concepts to life. "Seeing these challenges firsthand gave us some valuable insight into things we should be considering in our own project planning," said Nick Jones.

Experiences like this help students connect academic knowledge with industry practice while building relationships with professionals who once sat in the same classrooms. Thank you to W.M. Jordan and our alumni partners for investing in student success!

Last Friday, students in our first-year experience course traveled to Richmond to explore the construction industry firsthand through site visits with HITT Contracting Inc. and Clark Construction Group.

This first-year experience program supports students as they transition to campus life, develop academic skills, and begin exploring their chosen fields of study. Experiences like this help students connect classroom learning with real-world careers while building a stronger understanding of the construction industry.

Thank you to HITT and Clark for welcoming our students, sharing your expertise, and providing an inside look at the projects, people, and opportunities that will help shape their future.

What happens when architects and builders collaborate from the start?

This week, more than 50 students from both the Virginia Tech Myers-Lawson School of Construction and the Virginia Tech School of Architecture attended a presentation on the power of the design-build delivery method. Gabe Oliver, a School of Architecture alumnus and senior vice president and partner at GCS SIGAL and Derek Banocy, principal at CGS Architects, shared stories and lessons learned from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts project in Washington, D.C., which earned an ENR Project of the Year Award.

Architects and builders work side by side to shape the built environment. Our students benefited tremendously from spending time together and hearing the inspiring story of this powerful partnership.
