Who says the president can’t time travel? Today, I traded my usual presidential attire for something more 19th century. I dressed as Lucinda Stone, an early leader who helped make Kalamazoo College co-ed, and joined Dr. Charlene Boyer Lewis’ Salem Possessed class for their annual beloved cemetery tour. Because if you’re going to drop in on a history class during Halloween week, you might as well commit to the assignment. 🎃📚

Apparently, being the 19th president of Kalamazoo College comes with a few perks, including a personal welcoming committee from beyond the grave. 👻

The Spectral Scholars have sent some friendly spirits to campus, and they've already mastered my signature look. If you spot one, like Charlie Wallace '30 and Grace Lounds '27 did, take a selfie and send it to [email protected] by November 1. I hear there may be coffee mugs and treats involved.

At my first President’s Community Luncheon, I asked a simple question: What problems are we trying to solve together? Kalamazoo is tackling big challenges, from educational access to talent retention. Kalamazoo College brings curious students, deep expertise and bold ideas. What could we build together that none of us could build alone? Small college. Big thinking.

My “what if” questions met someone who took hers all the way to space. 🚀

What a joy to meet Dr. Ellen Ochoa—the first Latina in space! Scientist, astronaut, barrier breaker. A powerful reminder for our students: stay curious, ask big questions, and leave room for a future you haven’t imagined yet.

Proud that K and our community partners helped bring her to Kalamazoo. 🧡🖤

C***r floats, first-year friends and an entourage of squirrels. Our newest Hornets joined us at Hodge House for an afternoon ice cream social, and the conversation was every bit as good as the dessert. The students came for the c***r. The squirrels came for the intel. 🐿️😉
