Abstract: This event brings together speakers from gender-diverse (TGD) organizations to hold discourse on community-building and advocacy. Veteran and emerging community leaders will share their experiences and perspectives on fostering a sense of belonging within the TGD community, advocating for social and intersectional visibility, and facing current and future challenges.

🎤 Keynote Speaker: Kaspar Wan (He/him), founder of Gender Empowerment
Kaspar has been a strong voice for the trans community for more than a decade. He made the award-winning short documentary on his journey of finding himself – “Kaspar X – If I Had a Soul” and has been featured extensively in media and news. In 2015, Kaspar established Gender Empowerment, a charitable organization, to support trans individuals at different stages of their gender transition, providing relevant information, counselling and peer support; promoting their well-being and development; and supporting their families through public education. With his dedicated work in raising the visibility of and awareness on the needs of the trans community through collaboration and innovative initiatives, Kaspar aims to de-stigmatize and de-marginalize the trans community and make the community a prominent stakeholder in society.

Drawing on Donna Haraway’s concept of companion species and recent developments in animal studies, Dr. Chau Man Lut will offer a reading of Human Ip’s short story “Niu Mei”. The talk opens up new ways of approaching animal representation in Hong Kong literature, while considering how literary writing may reshape our understanding of the relationship between humans and feral animals.

當動物園的觀看從獸籠延伸至屏幕，我們究竟在看甚麼？

誠邀參加由劉欣玥教授主講的 Zoom 講座「從獸籠到屏幕：『動物園2.0』與近期中國青年寫作」。講座將探討動物園如何由傳統的現代大眾娛樂與規訓空間，轉化為經數字媒介再中介化的情感消費景觀；並結合 2020年以來與動物園相關的青年寫作，思考當代文學如何回應這種由數字媒介與情感消費邏輯共同形塑的觀看處境。

When zoo viewing extends from animal cages to screens, what exactly are we looking at?

You are warmly invited to a Zoom talk by Prof. Liu Xinyue, “From Animal Cages to Screens: ‘Zoo 2.0’ and Recent Chinese Youth Writing.” The talk examines how the zoo is shifting from a conventional modern space of mass entertainment and discipline into an affective consumer spectacle remediated through digital media. Drawing on youth writing about zoos that has emerged since 2020, Prof. Liu will consider how contemporary literature responds to forms of viewing shaped jointly by digital media and the logics of affective consumption.

When we return to the zoo, can we truly recognise the subjectivity of animals and nature? Can this encounter help us imagine new possibilities for coexistence between self and other?

Model/Making: Toward Generative Humanities
3rd Hong Kong Association of Digital Humanities Conference

21-24 January 2027

The concept of the model has been core to digital humanities, in the form of standards, statistics, prototypes, and practices. Building on this longstanding tradition, HKADH2027 explores how digital, computational, and analytical frameworks also become engines for cultural production. Alongside established analytical practices, the event will highlight the emerging horizons coming into view. Our theme, Model/Making, expands the discipline by embracing generative, artistic, and applied dimensions of models and modelling. The following areas are of particular interest.
• The use of models to create narratives, music, art, games; data modelling as artistic practice; algorithmic composition and procedural rhetoric
• Digital models and materialities, including printing, weaving, robotics, VR/AR environments, and storytelling forms
• Simulations and performances of events, dynamics, spaces; synthetic data in humanities contexts
• Archive, heritage, preservation implications of data models, corpus constructions, metadata standards, semantics and ontologies
• Collaboration between humans and AI in the production of cultural artifacts; collaboration between DH practitioners and others within or beyond the academy
• Theoretical lenses on generative capacities of models, including philosophy of technology, media theory, and infrastructure studies.
• Authorship, ownership, intellectual property; societal impact of data, data modelling, and AI; analysis on reliance or overreliance on generative media in various DH contexts
• Computational modelling and generative media in humanities curricula.
We welcome submissions on all relevant topics, and we welcome applications to make different kinds of contributions to the conference, including creative work, hands-on workshops, posters, papers, panels, and roundtables.
