【Better communication, better care: HKBU research supports IBD patients 💬】

How can online communication help people living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)? Research led by Professor Zhong Bu, Dean of HKBU’s School of Communication, shows that communication interventions can comfort patients and change the clinical course of the disease..

The medical community focused on drugs and surgery for years, but in 2021, Professor Zhong and his team’s study demonstrated that “structured participation in social media groups helped mitigate symptoms and improved outcomes.” The research has been put into practice with clinical partners in China and the US, benefiting nearly 1,000 patients.

In 2024, the programme was included in UNESCO’s Information for Development Working Group’s initiative on best practices—recognising how communication research can complement medical care and support patients in their daily lives.

【An alumni gift to help HKBU students excel and give back 💙】

HKBU has received a generous donation from alumnus Mr Ben Lam and his wife Ms Jade Lam to establish the Oneness Foundation Fund. Through scholarships, the Fund will support students in pursuing academic excellence and developing a strong sense of social responsibility.

At a recognition ceremony on 23 October, Mr Lam explained that the Fund aims to nurture students’ “agency”: the motivation and ability to pursue lives guided by their values and put those values into practice.

A journalism graduate and recipient of the Chang Kuo-sin Award for Aspiring Young Communicators, Mr Lam has supported communication students through the Intellectual Scholarship for Outstanding Performance since 2016. This latest gift extends that commitment to helping students excel academically and contribute to society.
