It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of our former student and colleague, Luke Vassallo.

Luke was a diligent and genuinely curious individual, with a particular passion for electronics engineering. His enthusiasm for the subject, willingness to learn and readiness to help others made him a valued member of our Faculty of Engineering community, both as a student and later through his contribution to our laboratories.

Beyond his academic abilities, Luke will be remembered for his gentle character and kindness. He was a point of reference for his peers and someone whose presence left a lasting and positive impression on those who had the privilege of knowing him.

It was wonderful to see him pursue his passion further through doctoral studies in electronics abroad, continuing the engineering journey he so dearly loved.

Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends and all those who knew him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Rest in peace, Luke.

🇬🇧 A warm welcome to our new engineering students!

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta kicked off the academic year with three days of activities designed to welcome our first-year students, help them find their feet, and introduce them to the people and opportunities that will shape their university experience. Throughout Freshers' Week 2026, students had the opportunity to meet academic and administrative staff, learn about the Faculty and its support services, and discover the many ways they can get involved in university life. The programme also included a student organisations fair, opportunities to meet fellow students, and fun, interactive activities, including a treasure hunt around the Faculty's laboratories and the Murder at the Book Club mystery, which brought students and staff together for some detective work!

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to organising the activities, welcomed our new students, and helped make the week a success.

To all our first-year students: welcome to the Faculty of Engineering! We wish you an exciting, rewarding and memorable journey ahead.

🇬🇧 We recently launched the Engineering Research and Innovation Cluster for Sustainable Development (ENRICH) at the University of Malta.

ENRICH brings together academics and researchers from across the University to strengthen collaboration and develop engineering solutions that address local and global sustainability challenges.

The cluster is structured around five research pillars aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, covering Good Health and Wellbeing, Clean Energy, Sustainable Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Sustainable Consumption and Production.



🇲🇹 Riċentement nedejna l-Cluster tar-Riċerka u l-Innovazzjoni fl-Inġinerija għall-Iżvilupp Sostenibbli (ENRICH) fl-Università ta’ Malta.

ENRICH jiġbor flimkien akkademiċi u riċerkaturi minn madwar l-Università biex isaħħaħ il-kollaborazzjoni u jiżviluppa soluzzjonijiet tal-inġinerija li jindirizzaw sfidi tas-sostenibbiltà, kemm lokali u globali.

🇬🇧 While lectures may be taking a break for the summer, activities at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Malta, certainly haven’t slowed down!

Our Faculty’s technical staff have been busy delivering a five-week Summer Training Programme for first-year students, giving them the opportunity to build on their first-year studies through additional hands-on experience.

Throughout the programme, students experience a broad range of foundational engineering techniques, including welding, machining, sheet metal fabrication, printed circuit board (PCB) design and manufacturing, electrical installations, PLC programming, automotive systems, and piping.

The training is prepared and delivered by the Faculty’s dedicated technical staff, who patiently guide students as they learn, practise and develop competencies that will support both their studies and their future careers in industry.

A big thank you to all involved for their dedication and commitment to our students!

L-istaff tekniku tal-Fakultà tagħna kienu impenjati bl-organizzazzjoni ta’ Programm ta’ Taħriġ tas-Sajf ta’ ħames ġimgħat għall-istudenti tal-ewwel sena. Dan qed jagħtihom l-opportunità li jibnu fuq l-istudji tagħhom tal-ewwel sena permezz ta’ aktar esperjenza prattika.

Matul dan il-programm, l-istudenti esperjenzaw firxa wiesgħa ta’ tekniki fundamentali tal-inġinerija. Dawn jinkludu l-iwweldjar, il-makinarju, il-fabbrikazzjoni tal-folji tal-metall, id-disinn u l-manifattura ta’ bord ta' ċirkwit stampat (PCB), l-installazzjonijiet elettriċi, il-programmjar tal-PLC, is-sistemi tal-vetturi, u xogħol fuq il-pajpijiet.

It-taħriġ huwa mħejji u pprovdut mill-istaff tekniku dedikat tal-Fakultà, li bil-paċenzja kollha jiggwida lill-istudenti filwaqt li jitgħallmu, jipprattikaw u jiżviluppaw kompetenzi li se jgħinuhom kemm fl-istudji tagħhom kif ukoll fil-karrieri futuri tagħhom fl-industrija.

It is with deep sadness that the Faculty announces the passing of our beloved colleague and friend, MaryAnne Magro Conti.

MaryAnne dedicated over 30 years of service to the Faculty, leaving a lasting impact through her professionalism, kindness, and friendship. She will be remembered by all who had the privilege of working with and knowing her, and her presence will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with her family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
May she rest in peace
