Sending a huge thank you to Dr. Ashley Howard of the University of Iowa for spending a couple of days with our students, faculty, and staff to discuss her book, Midwest Unrest.

Dr. Howard shared insights from her research in a talk for students and faculty on Thursday night, highlighting the key arguments of her book while also discussing her theoretical framework and methodology. On Friday afternoon, Howard had a great discussion with our graduate students about the state of the field and historians' work. And Friday evening, Dr. Howard sat down with Dr. Brandon Winford for a community discussion at thebottomknox.

We all benefited greatly from Dr. Howard's visit and look forward to future visits!

Great times at this year’s Food Truck Friday hosted by the history department’s Graduate Affairs Committee. Our faculty, staff, graduate students, families, and pups enjoyed wonderful conversations and great food on a beautiful day in the UT Gardens!

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, join us on November 19 at 6 PM for an engaging FREE lecture with Dr. Patricia Rutenberg exploring the remarkable women who helped shape Knoxville in the early 20th century. ❤️🤍💙

We'll examine the challenges Knoxville women faced as they forged new paths in the arts, education, activism, and civic life, highlighting the lives and accomplishments of artists Catherine Wiley and Adelia Armstrong Lutz, clubwoman Mary Boyce Temple, activist Lillian Cansler, and educator Lizzie Crozier French.

✨ Experience this special evening of history, storytelling, and reflection as we celebrate Knoxville’s women and their enduring contributions to our city!
