The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was formed on July 1, 2007, with the merger of the Computer Science Department and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. EECS offer three academic programs: electrical engineering; computer engineering and computer science. Each program provides degrees at the B.S., M.S.

EECS was well represented at the ACM AI Leadership Summit this week in Atlanta. Faculty members Katie Schuman, Xiongye Xiao, and FNU Suya accompanied a large contingent of students to discuss the future of AI. EECS was one of the supporting institutions for the summit, which brought together voices from research, industry, government, education, and civil society for meaningful dialogue on the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of AI.

Professor Fran Li was selected as the recipient of the 2026 IEEE PES Roy Billinton Power System Reliability Award and the IEEE PES Prize Paper Award for his contributions to probabilistic methods in market simulation, grid reliability, and resilience assessment.

Li is the first person affiliated with the University of Tennessee to be selected for the Billinton honor. Congratulations, Professor Li!

UT’s Global Computing Laboratory, led by MathWorks Professor Michela Taufer, recently helped link an imaging beam at Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source with autonomous workflow infrastructure at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in what may be the world's first material assessment conducted in two locations at once.

Phillip Graham led his own senior design project to create "Kakudachi", an AI-enabled tablet that helps Japanese language learners master writing kanji by providing feedback on handwriting and stroke order.

Built by an EECS senior design team, Kakudachi uses a treelike tutoring architecture to help students learn increasingly complicated kanji at a sustainable pace and integrates with a large language model to generate an endless stream of practice prompts.
