The Ewing Gallery welcomes Knoxville's Deaf Community to an evening of art in Art, Movement, and Disability at our on-campus location. This event will be led by Lee Handler, UT C'24, who works with cultural institutions to improve accessibility to exhibitions and spaces for Knoxville's deaf community. Lee will give two tours of selected works on exhibition. Gallery staff, Dr. Timothy Hiles, author of Art, Movement and Disability: Transcending the Beauty Paradigm, and ASL interpreters will be present to answer any other questions about works on exhibition.

Tour will be at 5:30 and 6:30 pm.
The Ewing Gallery is located in the first floor of UT's Art + Architecture Building
1715 Volunteer Blvd.

Congratulations to our very own Leala Holcomb!

For many researchers, earning an R01 award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a career-defining achievement. For Leala Holcomb, it came remarkably early.

The R01 is NIH’s flagship award for independent investigators, and receiving one typically takes years of research and a strong scholarly record. Leala earned one on the first attempt as an early-stage investigator, a rare accomplishment and the first R01 of this scale awarded at !

Leala's work to advance research on language and literacy development among deaf children shows the important connection between education and health and the ways educational experiences can shape lifelong health outcomes.

For Brooke Pelkey, that meant becoming the first person on her mom's side of the family to earn a graduate degree.

While teaching full-time at Farragut High School, Brooke earned her Master of Science in Teacher Education through the UTK College of Education, Health & Human Sciences.

"It has been very hard for me to juggle working while also doing my schoolwork. It's overwhelming at times, but it was very worth it."
