It is time to RSVP for the Fall 2026 LSUS Military Coining Ceremony. Membership is free and open to any LSUS student, faculty, or staff member who served or is serving in the United States Armed Forces and wishes to support and advocate for their fellow veteran students.

As a reminder, with Fall midterms and holidays coming up, be sure your current registration has been updated with the VA.

If you are using VA benefits for the Fall 2026 semester and you added classes for Fall AP2 or 1D term after you submitted your Veterans Benefits Form, please email or call our office to notify us of any added or dropped courses so that we can update this with the VA.

Make sure you are ready for the Spring 2027 semester. If you intend to use VA benefits in the Spring, set a reminder once registration opens, November 2nd, to submit your Veterans Benefits Form for the Spring.

Last week we hosted our inaugural Military Coining Ceremony. Thank you to all parties who participated in making this a successful event.

Please feel free to share and tag yourself in any photos. Thank you to all of our Veteran Alumni who have chosen to pursue their education with LSU Shreveport. We know you will take what you have learned from your studies at LSU Shreveport home to continue your service in your communities.

FYI, The VA accidentally sent payment hold notifications to over 44,000 VA education beneficiaries in the last 24 hours. Most of these notifications were automated in error.

Today marks the 36th anniversary of POW/MIA Remembrance Day. Before 1990 America did not have an official day to remember the sacrifice and unknown fate of thousands of soldiers. Today we pause to reflect on these sacrifices as we pray for the return of every lost American soldier, so that their families may have closure.

We felt it would be fitting to replant and refresh our POW and MIA memorial this year with Tradescantia Pallida, also known as Purple Heart. Our POW and MIA memorial and "freedom tree" were donated and installed over 50 years ago by The American Legion National Headquarters and our first fraternity, Delta Omicron Mu. DOM as they were known was made up of members from the 400 LSUS students who had served in armed forces, many of whom would have served in Vietnam by the time this memorial was installed in 1972.

If you are on campus today or later next week, please take a moment to visit our memorial just outside of the science building and our POW and MIA "Missing Man Table" on static display in the Collab. It is important that we all stop and reflect on the untold sacrifices of our prisoners of war and missing in action service members who answered the call of a grateful nation.

Thank you, Chancellor Dr. Robert Smith, and members of the Red River Garden Club for your support in paying tribute to those lost in service to our country.
