New from the Library & Archives blog! 📜

Whilst cataloguing a collection of papers from our alumni organisation, the Hertford Society, last year, we found two audio cassettes recording the memories of someone who had been a college servant at Hertford from before WW2 to 1960.

The tapes turned out to have been recorded by Bill Young (back row, second from left).

It's been a record year for work experience at Hertford! 🙌

This summer, nine students aged 14–17 from local schools spent a week with our Catering, Communications, International Programmes, Library & Archives and Maintenance teams, gaining hands-on experience and an insight into college life.

We asked them to describe their week in just three words… here’s what they said 💙

It's World Nature Conservation Day 🌏

And this is exactly what we are trying to do with Hertford's favourite magnolia tree while construction is still going on 👷

We look forward to seeing it in full bloom again 🌸

Community at the heart of everything 💙

Earlier this month, staff member Ewa Gluza represented the Oxford Polish Association at the opening of the Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, before helping to deliver the Schwarzman-co-organised Leys Festival community event the following day.

Hertford’s Dr Sam Henry, alongside students Alyssa Wu, Ayyappadas Chirukandath Suthy, Hannah Wei and Hari Downing, also took part, inspiring visitors with hands-on physics activities 🔬

Continuing our Archives series with a glimpse into Hertford's Old Hall ✨

In the north-east corner of Hertford's main quad, Old Hall dates back to the 16th century and is now used for SCR dining, meetings, drinks receptions and other events 💫

A warm Hertford welcome to Dr Julie Durcan, our new Tutorial Fellow in Geography 👋

Julie’s work uses luminescence dating to help us understand past climates, changing landscapes and the relationship between environmental change and human history.

Her research has taken her to sites across India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Australia and Namibia, investigating everything from ancient river systems to the environmental history of the Bronze Age Indus Civilisation 🌍

We’re delighted that Julie is joining the Hertford community 😊

‘I am so grateful for Swiftstream. It showed me that university can be for people like me’ 😊

Swiftstream is always a highlight of Hertford’s outreach calendar, and we were thrilled to welcome 20 students from Medway to Hertford in early July. Participants dove head-first into university life, attending subject talks and exploring colleges at the University Open Day, making new friends, and even hunting for ghosts on the ghost tour👻

We wish them all the best with their next steps!
