This week we are at the Digital Avionics Systems Conference (DASC) in Orlando, Florida, where Dr Ing. Brian Zammit - one of our colleagues from the Faculty of Engineering - is presenting some of the work that we carried out in two separate research and innovation projects: TADA and ARTIAP.

TADA is a European-funded project that is exploring the use of AI to assist air traffic controllers with arrival management, while ARTIAP is funded by Xjenza Malta and is investigating the use of AI in the flight deck.

The papers that are being presented at the DASC conference are:
-> Preliminary Validation of a Terminal Airspace Digital Assistant through Low-Fidelity Simulation: This paper was awarded the Best of Session Award (see photo below)
-> Supervised Machine Learning Models for Landing Runway Prediction

Just dismantling the main instrument panel for some maintenance 🛠️
This also allows for a sneaky look behind the instrument panels. In a real aircraft, the space behind the displays are filled with large avionics boxes. This allows for modules to be swapped out easily for maintenance and repairs. But in a simulator, the displays are "dummies;" they connect to the simulator PCs like normal monitors, and the avionics are all handled by the simulation software suite!

Follow along as our engineers work on our range of flight simulators! AerospaceMalta on Instagram is run by our scientific officer as a blog documenting a day in the life of a flight simulator engineer. Here is their latest post:

"Today my priority is this research simulator! This one is much lower fidelity than the full a320 cockpit sim I posted last time, but with the FlightFactor a320 model on xplane 11 this simulator is still pretty feature rich!"

The Institute of Aerospace Technologies is once again offering LAS2048 – Introduction to Civil Aviation and Aeronautics, a 4 ECTS, MQF Level 6 micro-credential designed to introduce participants to the fascinating world of civil aviation and aeronautics.

🌍 Anyone can apply — you do not need to work in aviation or have a technical background. Whether you are considering a future in the aviation sector, already work in the industry, or simply have an interest in aircraft and flying, this course offers an opportunity to broaden your knowledge.

Over the course of the study unit, participants will explore topics including:

🧭 Navigation, flight control and automation
🛫 The flight deck environment
